The Crocodile Queen, a nymphomaniacal hottie in Cleopatra garb, desires not only the most virile of men, but also the devil’s sword. The weapon in question is the second of its kind and the most powerful of the two. The Queen dispatches her most trustworthy, who is a member of the evil warriors, to locate and procure the blade for her evil doings.
A good warrior, Mandala, is also sent to take hold of the much coveted cutlass. The battle is on and everything from swords and lasers to chop-socky are employed in order to obtain the magic cutlery. Along the journey Mandala not only encounters the evil warriors, but also crocodile men (actors in rubber suits standing upright), a gigantic cyclops and a Charon-like character who mans a raft across the river to the Crocodile Queen’s underwater lair.
One evil warrior flies into a village on a rock, while another wields a deadly coolie hat and yet another has the power and ability to reconstruct her dismembered body. Limbs are lopped off by the dozens. Decapitated heads fly into the stratosphere and wounds spew blood like freshly found geysers. In the end the Crocodile Queen is revealed to be just that; half reptile and half woman while the remainder of the no-do-gooders receive their just desserts. Mandala wins the sword and all is well.
“The Devil’s Sword” (a.k.a. “Golok setan”) is 101 minutes of pure Eastern cinematic insanity that never lets up for even a minute. Psychedelic lighting, nightmarish monsters and 80’s gaudy colors help punch home what Mondo Macabro calls, “…the closest thing to a legal hallucinogen ever invented.” A fair statement for sure.
