Taika Waitit’s “Tama Tu” offers a refreshing look at war by examining a childish Maori battalion camped out in a ruined building during World War II. The soldiers become impatient with the sniping process and play practical jokes on one another, including a “shoot me” sign, while trying to keep their laughter quiet. Told with little dialogue, the film is a tense and amusing portrayal of war.
