The San Francisco Film Society sheds the kid gloves from [ November 3rd ] to [ November 9th, 2000 ] and throws a knockout punch with their Boxing Week event. Over seven days, the Society will screen 20 of the greatest fight films of all time, with classic features, documentaries, comedies, shorts and rediscovered gems all stepping up into the ring.
The program kicks off with “Battles of the Century: A Celebration of Boxing Films,” which was originally crafted by the National Film and Television Archive. “Battles” features footage from historic matches ranging from Jim Corbett vs. Bob Fitzsimmons (1897) to Joe Louis vs. Max Schmeling (1938) and live commentary by sports film historian Luke McKernan. Screening along with “Battles” will be Alfred Hitchcock’s rarely seen 1927 silent piece, “The Ring”. Additionally, both programs will have live musical accompaniment by pianist Jon Mirsalis.
