Seth Sonstein, owner and programmer of the Clinton Street Theater in SE Portland has an undying love for underground cinema. Films that have little chance of ever getting major studio distribution hold a special place in his heart. These films represent a huge segment of the artistic community, kooks and all, who are driven by their love of cinema, not deterred by the fact that few may ever see their films. The Portland Underground Film Festival or PUFF was created to put an audience in front of these wild visions.
The Clinton Street Theater has a long history of bringing odd outsider movies to their big screen. With twelve programs over four days, PUFF continues this tradition and promises to entertain, enlighten, and hopefully offend. Selections range from a feminist made documentary on the porn industry, a nuevo beatnik feature about the evils of rock n’ roll, and a compilation of video footage from local underground bike events.
