PHILLIP NOYCE: JUMPING THE MAINSTREAM FENCE

You’d think that a guy who has directed such films as The Bone Collector and The Saint would be cranking out his next mainstream Hollywood thriller based on yet another Tom Clancy novel or perhaps another “Seven” rip-off starring Morgan Freeman and Ashley Judd, but this is just not the case with director Phillip Noyce.

Rabbit-Proof Fence tells the tale of three aboriginal girls trekking across the Outback after escaping from their slave owners. Phillip Noyce talks with us about why he’s ditched the thriller genre for more somber subject matter and what it was like to return to his Australian home to shoot a smaller budgeted film.
