PHILIP GLASS: A THEME FOR CHAOS

By Greg Larson | October 11, 2002

It all began in 1983 when Philip Glass composed his first film score for Godfrey Reggio’s “Koyaanisqatsi.” The score went on to become one of his most adored recordings and received live orchestral performances at special performances of the film. Then in 1988 came “Powaqqatsi” and Glass was once again enlisted to provide a soothing score for Reggio’s images, which depicted a “Life in Transformation.” Now, 14 years later, the third and final film of the “Qatsi” trilogy is here. We spoke with Philip Glass about the haunting music he provided for the film, Naqoyqatsi of which the title translates into “War is a Way of Life.”
