The independent Nodance Film Festival, the world’s first DVD-projected film festival, has invited twenty-five feature films, shorts, music videos and documentaries to screen as part of its seven day event, January 18-24th, 2003. Returning to its headquarters on Main Street in Park City, Utah, Nodance celebrates the best in alternative digital film.
Nodance is proud to present a tribute featuring a retrospective of films from the illustrious career of director Mike Figgis, starting with the opening night film “Flamenco Women” on January 18th at 7:00pm, the centerpiece screening of Time Code, and closing the festival with Hotel on January 22nd at 7:00pm.
Competition features include the world premieres of “The Mole” (dir. Richard Mauro), “The War Effort” (dir. Bob Cesca), “The Last American” (dir. Audie Harrison), and festival fave “Outpatient” (dir. Alec Carlin).
Competition shorts include, “Another Life” (dir. Tracey D’Arcy), “Shadowboxer” (dir. Vilka Tzouras), and the world premieres of “The 7thMan” (dir. Jason Liggett), “The Warrior and his Peace” (dir. Phillip Montgomery), “Run” (dir. Clayton Allis), “Range Life” (dir. Robert Tronsdon), “Smalltalk Jack” (dir. Robert Lopuski) and “Evelyn” (dir. Brad Peyton).
The documentary competition will feature the world premieres of “Our House” (dir. Sevan Matossian), “Venice: Lost & Found” (dir. Brad Bemis), “Schmelvis: Searching for the King’s Jewish Roots” (dir. Max Wallace), and include the out-of-comp special sneak preview documentary screening of “Step Into Liquid” (dir. Dana Brown). Among the music videos screening are “Jakey Moves” (dir. Doug Pray), “Grown Up” (dir. Andy Dick), “So to Speak” (dir. Steven Wagner) and “Same Ol’ Road” (dir. American McGee).
This year’s presenting sponsor is Forest Whitaker’s Spirit Dance Entertainment. “With Forest’s help, we’re thrilled to be able to present the Mike Figgis tribute to the first-time filmmakers in Park City,” says Founder and Festival Director James Boyd. “By bringing together the indie film community’s hottest young talent with a great innovator of digital filmmaking like Mike Figgis, Nodance can hopefully nurture young filmmakers by giving them a sense of artistic direction.”
Once again, Nodance will present the “Out of the Box” sign-up program at the Nodance HQ. The program will provide screening space for any filmmaker with any project. “Out Of The Box” provides an alternative opportunity for all filmmakers to present their films in the unique Park City environment without having to face the normal festival screening process.
The festival will be held at the Main Street Mall (333 Main St.). All competition screenings will screen multiple times. Competition films, which are all digitally screened via DVD projection, are eligible for the Grand Jury and Audience Awards for Best Feature, Best Short and Best Documentary.
In addition to the screenings, our own Chris Gore will host the panel “Storytelling: Unplugged” on Tuesday, January 21st at 6:00pm at the Main Street Mall. Confirmed panelists include Ernest Dickerson (Director “Good Fences”), Mike Figgis (Director Time Code), Matthew Libatique (Director of Photography Requiem for a Dream) and Forest Whitaker (Actor/Director “Waiting to Exhale”).
