NO DUMB QUESTIONS

By Chris Gore | February 5, 2002

Kids say the darndest things. Especially when they are confronted with Uncle Bill’s sex change operation. Yes, Uncle Bill is going to become Aunt Barbara. For Uncle Bill’s young nieces, ages 6, 9 and 11, his desire to become a woman sparks some innocent questions. “Are they going to amputate your penis? Can I say penis?”
The children’s natural curiosity is the focus of this short documentary by filmmaker Melissa Regan. The film avoids dealing with deeper issues surrounding Transgender persons and instead deals with the emotional turmoil felt by family members of those going through the operation.
These kids are brutally honest about their feelings and when Bill finally arrives as Barbara, the end result is both unsettling and uplifting. A touching and truly moving documentary.
