By Phil Hall | August 26, 2001

18. CHASTITY (1969) ^ By the late 1960s, Sonny and Cher’s career hit the skids and they searched for a new way to revive their popularity. Sonny gathered up enough cash to produce this drama (which he wrote and scored) starring Cher as a teenage runaway looking for love in all the wrong places: truck stops, lesbian lairs, a Mexican brothel, etc. Exploitation distributor American International picked up the rights to the film but only dumped it on the drive-in circuit. Sonny would later disparage the film as a failure, although reviews cited Cher’s promise and skill as a dramatic actress (although audiences would have to wait a dozen years before she emerged as a major film presence). ^ WHY IS THIS FILM NOT ON VIDEO? “Chastity” has been held in a dispute on ownership for many years. Despite Cher’s seemingly neverending celebrity, the film has never been brought out on home video.
