MADSTONE CLOSES THEATERS

By Film Threat Staff | June 8, 2004

Citing a lack of business, the Madstone Theater chain shut down theaters in Ann Arbor, Mich.; Chandler, Ariz.; and Atlanta. The move cut Madstone’s locations to 7 cities from 10 across the country. Madstone said those theaters, in places like Denver, San Diego and Baltimore, would remain open.
Taking a flexible, community-oriented approach to programming, Madstone Theaters exhibits sophisticated first-run studio releases, specialty and foreign films and a diverse line-up of alternative content. Among the variety of alternative programs and events Madstone presents are: a unique new platform for independent filmmakers; a thematic series of art house classics; advanced screenings and discussions of upcoming independent releases; retrospectives of various directors’ early and recent works; and a reading series featuring live performances of new screenplays and other works by both emerging local talent and world-renowned authors.
