I’m a sucker for stop-motion animation, so I was very excited to watch the Oscar-nominated “Madame Tutli-Putli.” With stunning visuals and a beautiful sound track, this short film is nearly flawless. If it wasn’t for the lackluster story, this amazing film would have been perfect.
Madame Tutli-Putli boards the night train with all of her worldly possessions and is thrust into an existential adventure… which was all I was able to grasp from the story. That wasn’t necessarily that important when it came to reviewing this film, however, since the visuals and score are so amazing. Plus the short duration makes sure nothing overstays its welcome or come off gimmicky. For example, there’s a scene where Tutli-Putli is running through the train that seems so life-like that it’s scary. And I will even go on record as saying that all the characters have a unique look that would make Tim Burton envious for a life time. It’s just such a captivating film that I can’t wait to see any other work of Chris Lavis and Maciek Szcerbowski.
I really enjoyed this film and I recommend it to anyone who is fascinated with stop-motion animation, Jungian Psychology or psychedelic drugs because one thing is for certain: this film is definitely a trip.
