Writer/director Richard Linklater knows the ropes of coming-of-age movies — he’s tackled the talk, trials, and parties of high school and beyond in films like 1993’s “Dazed and Confused” and outward-bound date flick “Before Sunrise”. Linklater is now set to add technology to his tried-and-true formula with the Sundance 2001 Premiere of “Waking Life,” a CGI/DV film that stars Wiley Wiggins (of “Dazed” fame) and a cast of other Linklater alumni in a story about, you guessed it, a boy’s coming-of-age and search for the meaning of life.
“Waking Life” was initially shot on digital video with live actors like Wiggins. The film was then handed over to a team of animators to color, interpret and characterize as they pleased. The result, which is described as “shimmering impressionism with a pop cartoon flair,” is a first for Linklater and a groundbreaking piece of original film.
