GET HED: A JOHN CAMERON MITCHELL INTERVIEW

By Chris Gore | July 19, 2001

Hedwig and the Angry Inch is the greatest rock n’ roll musical to land at movie theaters since The Who’s “Tommy.” John Cameron Mitchell plays the title character Hedwig with a passionate rage. His performance adds depth to the drama scenes and layers to the comedy resulting in some incredibly kick a*s musical numbers. And as for the “Angry Inch,” well, there’s a very good reason that this rock goddess is pissed off. Mitchell, along with co-creator Stephen Trask, invented this tragic musical for the stage where it was a tremendous success and earned rave reviews and numerous awards. The team has brought it to the big screen with Mitchell doing double duty as both director and star. It’s an admirable feat when you consider that this film was his directorial debut. And he did it all dressed in drag. Let’s see Spielberg or Lucas on the set yelling “Action!” in heavy make-up, a wig and high heels! Those men could never handle it!
I spoke to Mitchell over the phone with only one condition – that we both wear women’s underwear during the interview. I have to say that “pink” is definitely not my color…
