FIRST FAN FILM AWARDS

By Film Threat Staff | December 28, 2001

The popularity and entertainment value of fan-made films relating to the Star Wars movies, and their impact on popular culture and the fan community, will be recognized at the first Star Wars Fan Film Awards.
The Star Wars Fan Film Awards will be presented at Star Wars Celebration II, which takes place less than two weeks before the theatrical release of Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones. The Awards will give producers of Star Wars fan films the opportunity to showcase their work to millions of viewers worldwide, both at the Star Wars Fan Film Network website and at Celebration II, the official Star Wars fan convention being held May 3 through 5 2002, in Indianapolis, Indiana. Original productions that qualify as finalists will compete for top honors, including an award picked by Star Wars creator George Lucas.
“Lucasfilm is excited about the Star Wars Fan Film Awards ,” said Jim Ward, Vice President of Marketing at Lucasfilm. “We are pleased that the Star Wars saga is inspiring future film makers. We’re looking forward to viewing our fans’ creativity and recognizing their contributions.”
The three main Star Wars Fan Film Awards presented at Celebration II will be:
George Lucas Selects^ The competition’s best overall entry, as selected by George Lucas.
Young Jedi Knight Award ^ The best film produced by a fan between the ages of 13 and 17.
Audience Choice Award ^ The competition’s best overall entry, as selected by fan voting.
Other awards for fan film achievement may also be announced at Celebration II. AtomFilms, producer of the Star Wars Fan Film Network, is accepting film submissions starting immediately until April 5, 2002. To qualify for the competition, films must meet the guidelines for Star Wars fan films outlined on the Fan Film Network.
New finalists will be posted monthly beginning in late January, and will join the collection of films currently available at the Fan Film Network site as candidates for award consideration. Starwars.com will feature news updates on the Fan Film competition. Star Wars enthusiasts will be able to enjoy and evaluate the competition entries online, and vote for their favorites in April.
The films in the competition selected for awards will be announced during Star Wars Celebration II at a ceremony that will honor the spirit of fan filmmaking as it helps shape the motion picture industry of the future. Celebration II is expected to be the largest gathering of Star Wars fans ever, with a projected 20,000 enthusiasts at the Indiana Convention Center in downtown Indianapolis. Fan Film Award finalists will run in a continuous, repeating track for fans to enjoy in a dedicated room.
