FILM THREAT’S 2007 ACADEMY AWARDS PREDICTIONS

By Mark Bell | February 20, 2007

The Film Threat audience has had their say, and now it’s time to take a look at all categories for the 2007 Academy Awards and voice our opinions as to what will be taking home the bald-headed golden statues. And to build the suspense, we’ll start with the smaller categories and work our way to Best Picture. Cue the montage, start up the orchestration and re-animate the corpse of Jack Palance, because here we go:

In the category of Documentary (short subject), the nominees are:
The Blood of Yingzhou District
Recycled Life
Rehearsing a Dream
Two Hands

And Film Threat predicts…
Recycled Life: It’s got children, dangerous toxic waste and an eco-friendly message of recycling. The Academy, and the environment-conscious (or so they want to be perceived) celebrity-elite will feel good about this one.

In the category of Film Editing, the nominees are:
Babel
Blood Diamond
Children of Men
The Departed
United 93

And Film Threat predicts…
United 93: The film brilliantly keeps track of almost a dozen different situations all happening at once, without even a moment of confusion for the audience.

In the category of Makeup, the nominees are:
Apocalypto
Click
Pan’s Labyrinth

And Film Threat predicts…
Pan’s Labyrinth: Between the creature with no eyes, the General’s disfigured face and the Faun itself, Pan’s Labyrinth runs away with this one.

In the category of Animated Short Film, the nominees are:
The Danish Poet
Lifted
The Little Matchgirl
Maestro
No Time for Nuts

And Film Threat predicts…
Lifted: Gary Rydstrom is an Academy favorite (they might as well name this the Rydstrom Award already), and he delivers again so… why not?

In the category of Live Action Short Film, the nominees are:
Binta and the Great Idea (Binta Y La Gran Idea)
Eramos Pocos (One Too Many)
Helmer & Son
The Saviour
West Bank Story

And Film Threat predicts…
West Bank Story: A musical about hummus and love amid fueding fast food restaurants, how can it not win?

In the category of Best Foreign Language Film, the nominees are:
After the Wedding, Denmark
Days of Glory (Indigenes), Algeria
The Lives of Others, Germany
Pan’s Labyrinth, Mexico
Water, Canada

And Film Threat predicts…
Pan’s Labyrinth, Mexico: We’d be discussing this film as a major contender for Best Picture if it were eligible, so if the Academy has any sense left, this is a given.

In the category of Best Adapted Screenplay, the nominees are:
Sacha Baron Cohen and Anthony Hines and Peter Baynham and Dan Mazer and Todd Phillips, Borat Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan
Alfonso Cuaron and Timothy J. Sexton and David Arata and Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby, Children of Men
William Monahan, The Departed
Todd Field and Tom Perrotta, Little Children
Patrick Marber, Notes on a Scandal

And Film Threat predicts…
William Monahan, The Departed: Start piling up the consolation Oscars now (hint, hint) because the end of the evening may not make many people happy.

In the category of Best Original Screenplay, the nominees are:
Guillermo Arriaga, Babel
Iris Yamashita and Paul Haggis, Letters From Iwo Jima
Michael Arndt, Little Miss Sunshine
Guillermo del Toro, Pan’s Labyrinth
Peter Morgan, The Queen

And Film Threat predicts…
Michael Arndt, Little Miss Sunshine: The little indie that could is going to end its success streak here, Good Will Hunting-style.
