FILM IN 140 PANEL SERIES: TEXTERS, TALKERS AND CRYING BABIES: CAN MICRO-CINEMA IMPROVE THE THEATER EXPERIENCE?

By Mark Bell | November 30, 2010

Film Threat’s next Film in 140 Panel on Twitter took place on Wednesday, December 8, 2010 from 9-10pm EST. Our topic was “Texters, Talkers and Crying Babies. Can Micro-Cinema Improve the Theater Experience?” and focused on the world of independent, micro-cinema screenings…

PANELISTS

  • Saskia Wilson-Brown (@saskiawb): After obtaining her Master’s Degree in Fine Art at London’s Central Saint Martin College of Art & Design, Saskia started her media career as a freelance music video and commercial production designer for the likes of Master P. She went on to serve as the festival director for Los Angeles’s fiercely independent Silver Lake Film Festival, launching the festival’s new media arm in addition to directing programming and music events. Moving on to work at Al Gore’s Emmy-Award winning Current TV as the head of filmmaker outreach and development, Saskia oversaw projects designed to gain new short format documentary content for the TV network, while overseeing cross-media initiatives and spearheading content partnerships on a global scale. In 2009 Saskia left Current and founded Cinema Speakeasy, a film screening series in Los Angeles. Designed as a replicable model, CS aims to show how independent films can find new audiences through personal, community-based engagement, and is currently expanding to other cities. She also works as a writer, film curator and producer.
  • Patrick Kwiatkowski (), Founder/CEO: Microcinema International, founded in 1996, specializes in the acquisition, exhibition, and distribution of independently produced works of an artistic and socially-relevant nature. Their mission is to seek out, curate, exhibit, promote, and distribute compelling works to a broad audience via existing and emerging mediums. This mission is realized through exhibition-based events, web-based platforms, educational outreach, modern marketing techniques, and digital and physical distribution.
  • Lisa Marr (@EPFCFilmmobile), Operations Director/Youth Film Coordinator: The Echo Park Film Center’s Filmmobile is an eco-friendly cinema and film school on wheels! The Filmmobile takes EPFC programs on the road to better serve their neighborhood and facilitate media arts exchanges with communities beyond Echo Park.

@shericandler RT @EPFCfilmmobile: Our staff programs work were interested in, inviting filmmakers to show… also folks find us! #filmin140 -9:08 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@saskiawb Cinema Speak finds films the old fashioned way: Word of mouth, by stealing other people’s programming ideas, or submissions. #filmin140 -9:09 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@dylanschenker One of the things I have noticed researching alt film spaces in NY is that it seems to tend toward experimental film #filmin140 -9:09 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@theshadowbox We create alot of programs to get local filmmakers to make films for us. For instance, we do a Sweded Film Fest regularly. #filmin140 -9:09 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@atlfilm365 Q: Are there certain films that seem especially suited for Micro-Cinema? #filmin140 -9:09 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@Filmin140Panel Are the films strictly indie fare? #filmin140 -9:09 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@shericandler RT @saskiawb: Cinema Speak finds films the old fashioned way: Word of mouth, stealing other peoples prog ideas, or submissions. #filmin140 -9:10 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@FilmThreat @theshadowbox Ha! I remember the Sweded stuff! #filmin140 -9:10 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@aprildenee @EPFCfilmmobile On buses?! That’s awesome and absolutely perfect for my current doc! How does that work?! #filmin140 -9:10 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@KarenWorden RT @saskiawb: Cinema Speak finds films the old fashioned way: Word of mouth, by stealing other people’s programming ideas, or submissions. #filmin140 -9:10 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@EPFCfilmmobile We have an open screen that anyone can participate in… we have established filmmakers and total newbies… #filmin140 -9:10 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@shericandler @theshadowbox what’s a Sweded film? #filmin140 -9:10 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@saskiawb We’re highly suggestible. But always totally indie (except the time we showed Reality Bites) #filmin140 -9:10 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@Filmin140Panel @atlfilm365 You asked the question better 😉 #filmin140 -9:10 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@atlfilm365 @Filmin140Panel It’s the magic of tequila. #filmin140 -9:11 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@vgbnd @atlfilm365 i think that traditionally they would be films outside the mainstream and outside the so-called “indie” world #filmin140 -9:11 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@gregorybayne @shericandler I find these, like what you point to in Boise to be highly localized movements, showing local stuff. #filmin140 -9:11 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@milesmaker @dylanschenker I’m inclined to say, ‘have audience, will screen’ and 4-wall an event experience vs. leasing an established space. #filmin140 -9:11 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@saskiawb local films tend to fare better, or films from ‘established’ indies. the problem of course is always in audience building. #filmin140 -9:11 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@FilmThreat @shericandler Sweded is from BE KIND REWIND. Homemade versions of big movies, usually hilarious #filmin140 -9:11 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@KonradStief Q: Are micro-cinemas specifically an USA movement? #filmin140 -9:11 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@gregorybayne @shericandler And they don’t usually take place in a cinema. #filmin140 -9:12 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@atlfilm365 @KonradStief Great question. #filmin140 -9:12 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@FilmThreat RT @milesmaker Im inclined to say, have audience, will screen and 4-wall an event experience vs. leasing an established space. #filmin140 -9:12 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@theshadowbox We’ve done themed sweded fests. Our halloween Sweded Horror fest was a huge hit. #filmin140 -9:12 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@milesmaker I also don’t define microcinema by the content screened; it should be simply defined by the nature of the screening itself. #filmin140 -9:12 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@Fansoffilm RT @lmcnelly: by calling @loopmovie? RT @shericandler: Q: so how do these cinemas find films? #filmin140 -9:13 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@dylanschenker @KonradStief It’s interesting, UK is doing the “Secret Cinema” thing which is an alt venue idea, but on a large scale #filmin140 -9:13 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@EPFCfilmmobile Some of the best screenings are the most spontaneous, in the strangest places… #filmin140 -9:13 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@Filmin140Panel What is the audience for these types of screenings? Where do they come from? #filmin140 -9:13 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@shericandler @Fansoffilm @lmcnelly sometimes @loopmovie calls me #filmin140 -9:13 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@zakforsman @milesmaker and that’s why my living room is my favorite microcinema. #filmin140 -9:13 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@saskiawb a good international one is secret cinema in london but i think anytime someone shows a film in their living room it qualifies. #filmin140 -9:13 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@EPFCfilmmobile How is it “secret”? #filmin140 -9:13 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@theshadowbox microcinema to me means offering an alternative to the multiplex. #filmin140 -9:13 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@KonradStief @milesmaker The medium is the message sentiment? #filmin140 -9:13 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@lmcnelly You must be important RT @shericandler: @Fansoffilm @lmcnelly sometimes @loopmovie calls me #filmin140 -9:14 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@shericandler to me too RT @theshadowbox: microcinema to me means offering an alternative to the multiplex. #filmin140 -9:14 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@milesmaker @secretcinema has also hosted events here in NYC over the Summer–theme oriented community events. #filmin140 -9:14 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@EPFCfilmmobile It’s about the direct engagement of audience, filmmaker and cinema. #filmin140 -9:14 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@atlfilm365 @theshadowbox What is that alternative to the multiplex though? It can’t be just about the films. #filmin140 -9:15 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@shericandler sorry forgot to say Portobello Pop Up in in London, so outside of the US @KonradStief #filmin140 -9:15 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@saskiawb trying to make parrallels between filmmakers and other artists #filmin140 -9:16 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@milesmaker @zakforsman I feel sorry for LA it’s somewhat fickle but I also feel a community can be built anywhere around the right needs. #filmin140 -9:43 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@mrbarnard1 #filmin140 What is the magic number? 1 screening a week? a month? every 2 months? Who comes, how often? -9:43 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@shericandler RT @EPFCfilmmobile: Same with EPFC… classes, workshops, venue rentals, all kinds of events in addition to films. #filmin140 -9:43 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@im2b RT @saskiawb: but what am i talking like an expert for– truth is it’s really hard to find audiences. #filmin140 -9:43 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@theshadowbox Giving something different is the point. It’s very difficult to get the younger people out though. #filmin140 -9:43 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@im2b RT @gregorybayne: So, so true. RT @saskiawb i know 1 thing: targeting indies to indie filmmakers means empty seats. #filmin140 -9:43 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@saskiawb another thing: making events out of your film screening means empty seats. #filmin140 -9:43 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@FilmThreat I too dig this idea of microcinema as the “Fugazi of Cinema”… #filmin140 -9:44 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@milesmaker @EPFCfilmmobile Youda man! All you’re doing is injecting a new event into the mix your audience moves in your direction. #filmin140 -9:44 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@saskiawb but having events, which also happen to feature an awesome film, brings people. #filmin140 -9:44 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@mrbarnard1 @saskiawb Can you clarify that statement? how is “event” a failure? #filmin140 -9:44 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@atlfilm365 Can you expound a bit mroe? RT @saskiawb: another thing: making events out of your film screening means empty seats. #filmin140 -9:44 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@EPFCfilmmobile @mrbarnard1 We screen whenever we have something to show. Other local experimental venues are programming months out. #filmin140 -9:44 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@shericandler oh? RT @saskiawb: another thing: making events out of your film screening means empty seats. #filmin140 -9:44 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@saskiawb (that is unless you have a LOT of money for marketing- then the film can be the event) #filmin140 -9:44 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@zakforsman absolutely agree! RT @saskiawb: but having events, which also happen to feature an awesome film, brings people. #filmin140 -9:44 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@saskiawb no one in the outside world thinks a film is an event. they think it’s an indie film, and assume it’ll suck. #filmin140 -9:45 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@shericandler @EPFCfilmmobile so does the bus just show up and people come out to watch? how do you determine a good location? #filmin140 -9:45 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@vgbnd @theshadowbox You can get a younger audience if you can offer them an alternative that they “can’t get on a laptop”… #filmin140 -9:45 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@rowlandjobson RT @gregorybayne: So, so true. RT @saskiawb i know 1 thing: targeting indies to indie filmmakers means empty seats. #filmin140 -9:45 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@atlfilm365 @saskiawb So how do you overcome that perception, that because it’s indie it will suck? #filmin140 -9:46 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@dylanschenker @saskiawb That sentiment also coincides with my feeling that people want the spectacle of film, not the “event” #filmin140 -9:46 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@EPFCfilmmobile @shericandler @EPFCfilmmobile We find locations where the film was shot, ie: showing THEM beside the LA River. Tweet location! #filmin140 -9:46 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@theshadowbox We screen around 8 films a month. #filmin140 -9:46 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@mrbarnard1 #filmin140 Casual observation is, teens LIKE movie theaters, but adults don’t think so because teens multi-task during movies. -9:46 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@dylanschenker But at the same time, how do you explain Secret Cinema’s success for “events”? Even Rooftop Films has extreme success. #filmin140 -9:47 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@atlfilm365 RT @saskiawb: introduce them to it through things that they actually like #filmin140 -9:47 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@saskiawb “tell them what they want, and give them what you want them to see” #filmin140 -9:47 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@vgbnd @saskiawb Why does making a screening an event mean empty seats? i’ve had the opposite experience with no $$$ for marketing… #filmin140 -9:47 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@zakforsman @milesmaker dont feel bad for LA. the indie community is different here many actually aspire to studio work. #filmin140 -9:47 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@mrbarnard1 @EPFCfilmmobile How do you accomplish that? Are cellphones forbidden? No chatting allowed? #filmin140 -9:48 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@saskiawb rooftop and secret are (at least in my understanding) about social scene/secrecy- the film comes next. #filmin140 -9:48 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@EPFCfilmmobile @shericandler @zakforsman @milesmaker We are figuring out what community means in LA… it’s getting better all the time! #filmin140 -9:48 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@milesmaker @zakforsman I hear ya. I’m not made for the machine I wanna build my own and wait for that call if it ever comes if not I’m good. #filmin140 -9:49 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@mrbarnard1 @shericandler I’ve been trying to sketch an idea for incorporating Twitter in the screenings #filmin140 -9:50 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@EPFCfilmmobile @dylanschenker People are turned off if they think they won’t understand something. demystify art by bringing it to the people. #filmin140 -9:50 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@saskiawb sadly, @dylanschenker i think most people think indie film is yawnsville. we know they’re wrong, of course. #filmin140 -9:50 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@atlfilm365 @dylanschenker For example, when we festivals say we’re showing films that may never get a release, we may be “sabotaging” films. #filmin140 -9:50 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@EPFCfilmmobile @shericandler @mrbarnard1 @theshadowbox We have! All kind of new technology to play with… #filmin140 -9:50 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@atlfilm365 @dylanschenker It’s not intentional, but it’s like saying take a test drive in a car that may never hit your local car dealer. #filmin140 -9:51 PM Dec 8th, 2010

@dylanschenker Interesting. Do mainstream audiences automatically conflate the avant garde and independent? #filmin140 -9:51 PM Dec 8th, 2010
