FILM IN 140 PANEL SERIES: MADE A FILM? THERE’S AN APP FOR THAT

By Mark Bell | May 6, 2011

Film Threat’s Film in 140 Panel on Twitter that took place on Wednesday, May 11, 2011 from 9-10pm EST was “Made a Film? There’s an App for That.” It used to be that you just needed a great website after you finished your film. Now, it’s all about the website, Twitter, Facebook and… iPhone/iPad/mobile apps. This Film in 140 panel will focus on what films have made apps, what the results have been, how to work with a developer, what can be done on these apps that add value to the audience and the most important question: should they be a source of revenue or free? Transcript below!

PANELISTS

  • Mark Smillie, Founder of Stonehenge Productions (@WeGoTo11)

    Stonehenge Productions provides an easy and economical way for indie film makers to distribute films on iTunes and Android’s Market. They create Apps that embed your film in the App (with in-app purchase, if you want), as well as rich media features such as photo albums, behind the scenes clips, trailers, and news. They also integrate and leverage social media (FB/Twitter/Email, etc.) games and contests to give fans the ability to share and build buzz for your film as well as analytics so you can see what, where and how long users are engaged with the App. Their goal is to encourage fan engagement and participation…not just to build a movie player.

  • Aron Ezra, CEO of MacroView Lab (@macroviewlabs)

    MacroView Lab builds a mobile app and a mobile website for your organization that will allow you to inform and interact with your community in real-time. You choose the content, and update it as often or rarely as you want. They set everything up for you,take care of all the submissions, and make sure that it keeps working on new phones as they come out. From an iPhone app to an Android app to a mobile website, they can have you up and running in weeks rather than months, and host everything while managing all the technical work – so there are no IT issues on your end. MacroView Lab worked with Film Independent for last year’s LA Film Festival app.

@MacroViewLabs Hi, this is Aron Ezra, CEO of @MacroViewLabs here to answer questions on apps and films– my bio is here: http://bit.ly/iIwfz1 #filmin140 -9:01 PM May 11th, 2011

@Filmin140Panel Our panelists tonight are founder of Stonehenge Productions, Mark Smillie (@wegoto11) and… #filmin140 -9:02 PM May 11th, 2011

@TheyMakeFilms What’s a beach? Is that where Atlantic City is? #guyinjersey #filmin140 http://bit.ly/lOSnNZ -9:02 PM May 11th, 2011

@Filmin140Panel …CEO of MacroView Lab, Aron Ezra (@MacroViewLabs) #filmin140 -9:02 PM May 11th, 2011

@wegoto11 Thanks for inviting me. This is Mark Smillie from Stonehenge Productions. AKA @wegoto11 #filmin140 -9:02 PM May 11th, 2011

@Filmin140Panel Though we have panelists, multiple voices are welcome, so join in the discussion! #filmin140 -9:03 PM May 11th, 2011

@Filmin140Panel Okay, first question for the panelists… #filmin140 -9:04 PM May 11th, 2011

@wegoto11 You probably have questions, so ask away! #filmin140 -9:04 PM May 11th, 2011

@Filmin140Panel @wegoto11 and @MacroViewLabs We’re talking about apps, can you give a brief highlight of your backgrounds. #filmin140 -9:05 PM May 11th, 2011

@LordBronco #filmin140 So, apps in film? are you speaking of distribution aiding apps, perhaps? -9:05 PM May 11th, 2011

@MacroViewLabs We make it easy to create apps and mobile websites for companies and nonprofits in and out of the entertainment world. #filmin140 -9:06 PM May 11th, 2011

@wegoto11 personally, I’ve been an analyst, in pharma bus, & technology. doing FilmApps for about a year and a half w stonehengeproductions #filmin140 -9:06 PM May 11th, 2011

@wegoto11 @LordBronco all of the above. Apps help in distribution. Can be built to cover the film’s lifecycle. #filmin140 -9:08 PM May 11th, 2011

@FilmThreat If you’re a filmmaker or film festival rep curious about how apps can work for you, check in with the conversation at #filmin140 -9:08 PM May 11th, 2011

@ApprovedStudios @LordBronco These are most apps that promote your movie once it’s been produced #filmin140 -9:08 PM May 11th, 2011

@MacroViewLabs Agree. App serve a huge range of purposes: they can help with promotion, distribution, engaging fans, driving ticket sales, etc. #filmin140 -9:08 PM May 11th, 2011

@Filmin140Panel So what is an app? It’s a word that’s thrown around alot. #filmin140 -9:09 PM May 11th, 2011

@wegoto11 An app we did for film: lovers in a dangerous time, helps them when speaking with distributors. #filmin140 -9:09 PM May 11th, 2011

@Filmin140Panel @wegoto11 How did they use that when speaking to distributors? #filmin140 -9:10 PM May 11th, 2011

@MacroViewLabs An app, or application, refers to a downloadable piece of software that allows the user to do things, often on a mobile device. #filmin140 -9:11 PM May 11th, 2011

@FilmThreat Are most apps just extensions of a film’s website, or are they for more individual products? #filmin140 -9:11 PM May 11th, 2011

@shericandler @MacroViewLabs does it always have to be downloaded or can it be a web app too? #filmin140 -9:12 PM May 11th, 2011

@wegoto11 The film makers were able to show distribs the app: the film, the trailers, the background clips…content as a marketing vehicle #filmin140 -9:12 PM May 11th, 2011

@FilmThreat And we’re hitting the general questions first, so we’re all on the same page when it gets detailed 😉 #filmin140 -9:12 PM May 11th, 2011

@MacroViewLabs It can be a tool to take pictures (like hipstamatic) or a tool to help people find the nearest theater playing a certain film #filmin140 -9:12 PM May 11th, 2011

@wegoto11 @FilmThreat: an App has to have UTILITY. It has to be way more than an extension of the web site. #filmin140 -9:13 PM May 11th, 2011

@MacroViewLabs An example of an app we’ve developed is the LA Film Festival http://bit.ly/jRDjdK – we’re working on the 2011 version right now #filmin140 -9:13 PM May 11th, 2011

@ApprovedStudios @MacroViewLabs So you don’t do the same kind of App as Stonehenge? #filmin140 -9:13 PM May 11th, 2011

@wegoto11 It can’t just be a wrapper for a film. You need people to interact with it and come back to use it every day. #filmin140 -9:13 PM May 11th, 2011

@wegoto11 our Bomb It (@jonreisss) FilmApp allows users to take pictures of street art, post it, rate it, & find it when they’re in a city #filmin140 -9:14 PM May 11th, 2011

@deadcenter #filmin140 From a nonprofit/fest POV, the resources to launch an app are daunting. What benefit should we expect when deciding to go ahead? -9:14 PM May 11th, 2011

@leonardzelig I’m just researching with my collaborator @DanielaPeinado apps for filmmakers we blog at http://bit.ly/9qEyTM I have a great list #filmin140 -9:15 PM May 11th, 2011

@MacroViewLabs Agree with Mark. Both native downloadable apps and a web app (“Mobile website”) must have useful functionality and be fun to use #filmin140 -9:15 PM May 11th, 2011

@wegoto11 That’s utility. Because people will use it every day. #filmin140 -9:15 PM May 11th, 2011

@Filmin140Panel @MacroViewLabs That’s a key word Fun. Do you think most apps being created for film are actually fun? Or to push tickets 1st? #filmin140 -9:16 PM May 11th, 2011

@wegoto11 When deciding how much to spend on an App, look at the alternatives (static press) and consider what you get from an app. #filmin140 -9:17 PM May 11th, 2011

@MacroViewLabs Regarding benefits- apps can broaden awareness, drive revenue through ticket/merch sales/sponsor sales, appeal to fans, and more #filmin140 -9:17 PM May 11th, 2011

@wegoto11 An app is interactive, engaging and participatory. You can literally communicate with your users. #filmin140 -9:17 PM May 11th, 2011

@leonardzelig We are more into apps that help you make your films. We made #GuerrillaFilms in my next post I’ll start the list with links #filmin140 -9:18 PM May 11th, 2011

@wegoto11 good point @MacroViewLabs. an app has to be FUN FUN FUN. #filmin140 -9:18 PM May 11th, 2011

@MacroViewLabs Pushing tickets should always be second, imho. Give users/fans a great experience first, and sales follow. No one wants an ad. #filmin140 -9:19 PM May 11th, 2011

@leonardzelig http://bit.ly/mfspJM islate is your perfect green digital slate and it’s free #filmin140 -9:19 PM May 11th, 2011

@wegoto11 We just launched an app for the Film Sync or Swim. It’s fun. Besides the regular film stuff it has interactive trivia game. Fun. #filmin140 -9:20 PM May 11th, 2011

@shericandler amen to thatRT @MacroViewLabs: Pushing tickets should always be second. Give users/fans a great experience first,No1 wants an ad. #filmin140 -9:20 PM May 11th, 2011

@FilmThreat Is there any real money to be made for filmmakers by having an app, or is the “for free” approach the best way to go? #filmin140 -9:21 PM May 11th, 2011

@MacroViewLabs Think about creating trivia contests about your characters, augmenting their backstories, showcasing fan chats, etc. #filmin140 -9:22 PM May 11th, 2011

@leonardzelig Here you have a list of 22 apps that help you tell your story: http://bit.ly/96eNIz #filmin140 -9:23 PM May 11th, 2011

@wegoto11 There is money to be made. We are now building apps that are free but have an in-app purchase of the film. #filmin140 -9:23 PM May 11th, 2011

@wegoto11 This allows us to have a lot of content that’s “free” that gets users interested enough to purchase the film (in the app) #filmin140 -9:24 PM May 11th, 2011

@Filmin140Panel @MacroViewLabs Backstories, contests…Is that something filmmakers should be doing before they shot the film, or after? #filmin140 -9:24 PM May 11th, 2011

@FilmThreat @wegoto11 That sounds great. #filmin140 -9:24 PM May 11th, 2011

@norestrictions @FilmThreat we did a free app to promote our first film with @wegoto11 & iTunes sales went up 400% over the previous quarter. #filmin140 -9:24 PM May 11th, 2011

@FilmThreat Good question, @Filmin140Panel: when does app preparation begin for the filmmaker? #filmin140 -9:25 PM May 11th, 2011

@MacroViewLabs @FilmThreat: I think “freemium” apps make a lot of sense – you can get cool basic material out there & still make $ #filmin140 -9:25 PM May 11th, 2011

@wegoto11 We have apps that have driven great sales, and we have apps that have had very low sales but have increased awareness. #filmin140 -9:25 PM May 11th, 2011

@leonardzelig What you guys think of the opportunities of mktng of checkin pages like @getglue? that’s a great app for film and tv junkies #filmin140 -9:25 PM May 11th, 2011

@MacroViewLabs @Filmin140Panel @MacroViewLabs – Either. Depends on the story, I think. This brings up a great point: the content should evolve #filmin140 -9:26 PM May 11th, 2011

@leonardzelig @Filmin140Panel Do you have the link of that app you created? #filmin140 -9:26 PM May 11th, 2011

@wegoto11 App prep can start as early as you want. Build the app for the lifecycle. #filmin140 -9:26 PM May 11th, 2011

@wegoto11 We can integrate kickstarter into it to even help you raise money #filmin140 -9:26 PM May 11th, 2011

@MacroViewLabs Before the film comes out you want cool teaser content, then you have a different experience when it’s in theaters and afterwards #filmin140 -9:27 PM May 11th, 2011

@FilmThreat @wegoto11 integrating crowdfunding too? Okay, we should talk later 😉 #filmin140 -9:27 PM May 11th, 2011

@wegoto11 @leonardzelig we’ve considered integrating getglue into the app. easy to do and could be very cool #filmin140 -9:28 PM May 11th, 2011

@MJ_Slide lurking in on #filmin140, some much awesome info about apps and using them to connect and build your audience #filmmaking -9:28 PM May 11th, 2011

@MacroViewLabs We provide customers with a CMS to edit content and upload new pictures, videos, games, and text then publish it 24/7 to all apps #filmin140 -9:28 PM May 11th, 2011

@wegoto11 @leonardzelig…not sure if you’re asking me, but here’s some apps we’ve done…http://www.stonehengeproductions.com #filmin140 -9:28 PM May 11th, 2011

@Filmin140Panel @MacroViewLabs In your experience, is there a good time to release a teaser app? Is a year to early? Is a month out to late? #filmin140 -9:28 PM May 11th, 2011

@MacroViewLabs I think a couple months beforehand is a good time #filmin140 -9:30 PM May 11th, 2011

@Filmin140Panel @MacroViewLabs And following that up, how often is effective updating for an app #filmin140 -9:30 PM May 11th, 2011

@MacroViewLabs @jenlinmcclin @deadcenter – the resources don’t have to be daunting for a film festival app – email us for more info; it’s easy! #filmin140 -9:30 PM May 11th, 2011

@FilmThreat What kind of costs are filmmakers or fests looking at for app development? Is this cost effective for DIY indie filmmaker set? #filmin140 -9:31 PM May 11th, 2011

@MacroViewLabs Some of our clients update their apps daily, some monthly, some never. Fresh content is critical so it’s hard to overdue it. #filmin140 -9:32 PM May 11th, 2011

@Tearsinrain78 All Greek to me RT @MJ_Slide: lurking in on #filmin140, some much awesome info about apps and using them to connect and build your audience -9:32 PM May 11th, 2011

@wegoto11 Our apps start at $680 and have a great set of features (http://bit.ly/fGiK6m) We can then build up more complicated apps. #filmin140 -9:33 PM May 11th, 2011

@FilmThreat @Tearsinrain78 Might as well start learning now, if you keep down the producer road 😉 #filmin140 -9:33 PM May 11th, 2011

@wegoto11 @MacroViewLabs agree. keep the content fresh. that keeps users coming back to use the app. Otherwise it’s DOA! #filmin140 -9:34 PM May 11th, 2011

@MacroViewLabs Regarding costs, there’s a huge range – totally depends on the goal. We do work for Fortune 500 companies and the indie crowd. #filmin140 -9:35 PM May 11th, 2011

@leonardzelig @Filmin140Panel How often this chat happen? I kinda have to go, but this is so great! #filmin140 -9:35 PM May 11th, 2011

@Filmin140Panel @wegoto11 @MacroViewLabs If I have a film, or a film event, what should I bring to the table to help you create a great app? #filmin140 -9:36 PM May 11th, 2011

@shericandler @leonardzelig we aim for bi monthly, but usually hit monthly 🙂 #filmin140 -9:36 PM May 11th, 2011

@FilmThreat @Tearsinrain78 Every panel transcript is available the next day at @FilmThreat.com http://bit.ly/kk6hF4 #filmin140 -9:36 PM May 11th, 2011

@FilmThreat Great Q @Filmin140Panel #filmin140 -9:36 PM May 11th, 2011

@FilmThreat @leonardzelig The transcript will be on @FilmThreat.com tomorrow #filmin140 -9:37 PM May 11th, 2011

@leonardzelig @shericandler Thanks… I just love twitter and of course this kind of initiatives! #filmin140 -9:37 PM May 11th, 2011

@wegoto11 To start an App we need this: http://bit.ly/iG6Dv9 We base the app on what you’ve already created to keep w the brand. #filmin140 -9:37 PM May 11th, 2011

@dschmudde @wegoto11 @MacroViewLabs Are games one way to keep the content fresh? #filmin140 -9:37 PM May 11th, 2011

@shericandler @leonardzelig you’ve found the right group then #filmin140 -9:38 PM May 11th, 2011

@wegoto11 Then we need ideas to make it useful…really based on what your objective is. #filmin140 -9:38 PM May 11th, 2011

@MacroViewLabs Bring ideas, enthusiasm & content. The more you can provide (images, videos, never-before-seen footage & offers), the better. #filmin140 -9:38 PM May 11th, 2011

@wegoto11 for example, our Race to Nowhere App’s goal is to build a movement to change the US education system. #filmin140 -9:38 PM May 11th, 2011

@Filmin140Panel RT @wegoto11: To start an App we need this: http://bit.ly/iG6Dv9 We base the app on what youve already created… #filmin140 -9:39 PM May 11th, 2011

@wegoto11 So we built a way to allow users to record and post video testimonials of their experience. Engaging & Useful #filmin140 -9:39 PM May 11th, 2011

@MacroViewLabs Here’s a story we wrote that might be useful – tips for building a great app: http://bit.ly/k7ouIl #filmin140 -9:40 PM May 11th, 2011

@deadcenter .@wegoto11 @MacroViewLabs There are a lot of developers out there. Any red flags or good signals to watch out for? #filmin140 -9:40 PM May 11th, 2011

@Filmin140Panel Do you run into projects that don’t have enough pictures and content when they approach you? #filmin140 -9:40 PM May 11th, 2011

@shericandler @wegoto11 ooo good to know for a film I am working on in development stage cc:@emergencegrrl #filmin140 -9:40 PM May 11th, 2011

@MacroViewLabs I think games are a great way to keep the content fresh. We’ve built scavenger hunts based on stories, video games, and more. #filmin140 -9:41 PM May 11th, 2011

@ShortoftheWeek Can the app store be effective as a simple short film sales platform? I’m thinking of the success of self distributed ebooks #filmin140 -9:41 PM May 11th, 2011

@wegoto11 re developers. Make sure they have a track record and have good references. #filmin140 -9:41 PM May 11th, 2011

@FilmThreat This may be less frantic than other panels we’ve had, but folks came loaded with links and info. Love it! #filmin140 -9:41 PM May 11th, 2011

@wegoto11 @ShortoftheWeek Yes. We have done a number of shorts. It’s great because they are very “consumable” on a mobile device. #filmin140 -9:42 PM May 11th, 2011

@MacroViewLabs Yes, we’ve had folks ask us to create an app before they have any content, ideas, or even a target audience. That makes it tough. #filmin140 -9:42 PM May 11th, 2011

@dschmudde @MacroViewLabs RE: Scavenger Hunt Games – are those Augmented Reality games or something more conventional? #filmin140 -9:42 PM May 11th, 2011

@leonardzelig Is so exciting how the world and our craft distribution is changing! Never thought on creating an app to promote a film #filmin140 -9:43 PM May 11th, 2011

@MacroViewLabs We can do augmented reality scavenger hunts, QR code based hunts, location based hunts, clue/text based, etc. #filmin140 -9:43 PM May 11th, 2011

@Filmin140Panel @MacroViewLabs That brings up a good point. How do you define your target audience for an app? Is it totally based off the film? #filmin140 -9:44 PM May 11th, 2011

@MacroViewLabs AR is usually a little pricey for indie filmmakers, but they’re great for festivals, studios, etc. #filmin140 -9:44 PM May 11th, 2011

@MacroViewLabs Re: Target Audience. Used to be that the app audience could be different than film’s target audience, but that’s not the case now #filmin140 -9:46 PM May 11th, 2011

@leonardzelig @MacroViewLabs @wegoto11 Do you have case studies of apps that had helped promoting a film on your websites? #filmin140 -9:46 PM May 11th, 2011

@wegoto11 Identifying the audience helps. We have an App (WGOOS) that has done very well, primarily because of the niche audience. #filmin140 -9:46 PM May 11th, 2011

@wegoto11 re audience: Same for Bomb It. Focus is Audience. Adoption is huge. #filmin140 -9:46 PM May 11th, 2011

@Filmin140Panel And to piggyback off that. How much should an app be able to stand alone without the film? #filmin140 -9:47 PM May 11th, 2011

@wegoto11 @leonardzelig re case studies. We don’t have any formal “white papers” probably a good idea to do… #filmin140 -9:47 PM May 11th, 2011

@leonardzelig @wegoto11 I’m just imagining the new section in my futures Biz Plans! #filmin140 -9:48 PM May 11th, 2011

@wegoto11 re stand-alone apps, I think they should be related to the film and the film’s objective. #filmin140 -9:48 PM May 11th, 2011

@ShortoftheWeek What can we do to make film apps more “discoverable” so that casual app buyers find them easier? Again thinking ebooks #filmin140 -9:49 PM May 11th, 2011

@wegoto11 But, again….focus the App on utility. for example, charmin (the toilet paper people) have an app that helps you find bathrooms #filmin140 -9:49 PM May 11th, 2011

@MacroViewLabs If the app is for the film, I agree with @wegoto11. But if it’s for a festival or studio, it should be able to stand alone. #filmin140 -9:50 PM May 11th, 2011

@wegoto11 @ShortoftheWeek that’s the key. If an app has utility and a reason to use it, people will find it. #filmin140 -9:50 PM May 11th, 2011

@wegoto11 @MacroViewLabs good point. Festival apps could stand alone. #filmin140 -9:51 PM May 11th, 2011

@shericandler @ShortoftheWeek I think that is why a site like yours is important. You guys should have a short film app in focus section #filmin140 -9:51 PM May 11th, 2011

@leonardzelig I’ve to go, but as usual. Much gratitude 2 u guys for the #filmin140. Next one I’ll feature it in my blog http://guerrilla-filmmaking.com -9:51 PM May 11th, 2011

@Filmin140Panel @MacroViewLabs @wegoto11 What’s your opinion on indie filmmakers creating apps to build up their brands, ala like a studio? #filmin140 -9:51 PM May 11th, 2011

@wegoto11 @leonardzelig Cheers! Thanks for the questions. #filmin140 -9:52 PM May 11th, 2011

@shericandler there’s too much noise on the web to depend on people casually finding your film, you must get the word out, make them seek it #filmin140 -9:52 PM May 11th, 2011

@MacroViewLabs Promotion is key. I did this interview last week about promoting retail apps, but there are good ideas here: http://bit.ly/ll07tF #filmin140 -9:52 PM May 11th, 2011

@wegoto11 re build brands. Great idea. And it helps people focus. Think a video jukebox for your brand. #filmin140 -9:53 PM May 11th, 2011

@MacroViewLabs Bottom line: mobile is increasingly the way that people are finding and digesting information. It’s important to be there. #filmin140 -9:54 PM May 11th, 2011

@wegoto11 And mobile will ultimately connect with the big screen. Your mobile device will become your computer. #filmin140 -9:56 PM May 11th, 2011

@MacroViewLabs 2 quick stats: there are 400,000 Android devices and 350,000 Apple devices activated daily. #filmin140 -9:57 PM May 11th, 2011

@shericandler Nielsen says 31% of Americans have smartphones, this will only increase #filmin140 -9:57 PM May 11th, 2011

@MacroViewLabs And Gartner says that by 2013, more people will access the Internet through mobile phones than personal computers. #filmin140 -9:57 PM May 11th, 2011

@LordBronco #filmin140 One last question before you guys go-and it’s a generic-IOs vs Android. any thoughts? -9:58 PM May 11th, 2011

@Filmin140Panel One last question: What do you think of the future of pads and films? #filmin140 -9:58 PM May 11th, 2011

@shericandler namely Asian/Pacific Islanders (45%), Hispanics (45%) and AfricanAmericans (33%), Caucasians (27%), if your film has ethnic focus #filmin140 -9:59 PM May 11th, 2011

@MacroViewLabs re iphone v. android – do them both (and a mobile website). We let you build it once and deploy it to all those platforms. #filmin140 -9:59 PM May 11th, 2011
