Film Threat’s last Film in 140 Panel on Twitter took place on Wednesday, June 22, 2011 from 9-10pm EST. Our topic was “Do You Hulu? Getting Your Film On iTunes, Netflix And Other Big-Name Platforms.” In this final installment on digital distribution tools and services, we took a look at accessing audience recognizable platforms like iTunes, Amazon, Netflix and Hulu. While some may allow the filmmaker to go direct, others require the services of an aggregator either to access their sites or to get preferential placement. Transcript below!
PANELISTS
- Adam Chapnick, CEO of Distribber, an IndieGoGo Company (@adamchapnick)
Distribber was founded in 2009 by Adam Chapnick to serve the glaring need for transparency, simplicity, and ease in independent film distribution.With Distribber, you can access iTunes, Amazon, Hulu, Netflix and Cable VOD. Distribber charges a one-time fee for store placement; no back-end fees. You keep 100% of your revenues. If iTunes declines your film, they will refund your money minus $39 for processing.For more information on Distribber, access their website http://www.distribber.com/howitworks
- Scilla Andreen, CEO of Indieflix (@IndieflixCEO)
IndieFlix is a “filmmakers first” online marketplace and distribution company created to empower filmmakers (both as artists and as entrepreneurs) and to make film festival-selected works from around the world available to the broadest online audience possible.With IndieFlix, filmmakers are not locked in and are always free to explore other outlets. Filmmakers receive 70% of their films’ net profit, and IndieFlix receives 30%. “Net profit” means the royalties (money) filmmakers and IndieFlix receive after any costs are paid out. IndieFlix does not charge any service fees and all information is shared so you know how much you make right from the very first sale. All films on IndieFlix.com are sold in DVD format and as a streaming online pay-per-view. They also make some titles available on key online delivery platforms such as Hulu, SnagFilms, Amazon VOD, Netflix, iTunes and cable VOD; therefore offering filmmakers more revenue opportunities at the same 70/30 split.For more information on Indieflix, access their website http://indieflix.com/pages/filmmaker/

@Filmin140Panel How difficult is it for filmmakers to get on the big-name platforms? Have you had films turned away? #filmin140 -9:06 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@leonardzelig @IndieFlixCEO I saw an awesome film game at the toy’s fair at Javits… with short films distributed by @IndieFlix #clever #filmin140 -9:06 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@shericandler I like that none of you take rights or are exclusive #filmin140 -9:06 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@adamchapnick @Filmin140Panel We can pretty much put your film on iTunes if you’re over 60 mins and have appropriate technical deliverables #filmin140 -9:07 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@IndieFlixCEO We give 70% to the filmmaker and there are no fees. We can place content on iTunes, Netflix. Cable VOD, Hulu etc. #filmin140 -9:07 PM Jun 22nd, 2011

@IndieFlixCEO Thank you @leonardzelig the movie game Film Festival in a Box has been an awesome marketing tool for indie films #filmin140 -9:08 PM Jun 22nd, 2011

@leonardzelig What’s the average revenue for a semi-successful films usig your platforms? #filmin140 -9:09 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@IndieFlixCEO We submit films monthly to all the major platforms. Honestly sometimes we get a response quickly other times it takes forever #filmin140 -9:09 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@leonardzelig @IndieFlixCEO I was so proud when I saw it… Kudos! #filmin140 -9:10 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@WaterholeMovie Get ready for some good learning peeps! RT @adamchapnick: sorry, it’s http://bit.ly/c73hQY #filmin140 -9:10 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@IndieFlixCEO Hollywood films are filling the pipelines to the major platforms hence slowing the process down some for the smaller films #filmin140 -9:10 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@adamchapnick @leonardzelig Hard to answer per se, but “no-name” films earn between a couple of hundred/month to a few thousand/month #filmin140 -9:10 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@joshfolan @Filmin140Panel I’ve heard Hulu is touchy about sound quality requirements – have you guys seen this come up at all? #filmin140 -9:12 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@joshfolan @Filmin140Panel I’ve heard Hulu is touchy about sound quality requirements – have you guys seen this come up at all? #filmin140 -9:12 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@leonardzelig @adamchapnick Awesome thanks! #filmin140 -9:12 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@Filmin140Panel What can the smaller films do to stand out on the major platforms? #filmin140 -9:12 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@IndieFlixCEO films on @IndieFlix vary in revenue based on how much the marketing. There is a direct $$$ effect when filmmakers help to mkt film #filmin140 -9:12 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@adamchapnick @Filmin140Panel Note some “real-world” relevance, like a holiday or current event to link your film to. #filmin140 -9:13 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@leonardzelig In 140 words or less: what’s the average criteria to select the films that you’ll be associated with? #filmin140 -9:13 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@IndieFlixCEO We’re building out the @IndieFlix brand & curating to help smaller films stand out on the major platforms. #filmin140 -9:13 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@sfelt RT @IndieFlixCEO: I’m a filmmaker turned distributor. @IndieFlix is a film dist company that curates and brings indie films to the mainstream. #filmin140 -9:13 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@adamchapnick @Filmin140Panel @joshfolan I find that all the platforms are touchy about all aspects of QC. They really don’t want to be judged #filmin140 -9:14 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@Filmin140Panel @IndieFlixCEO How challenging has it been to build the brand on the major platforms? #filmin140 -9:14 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@shericandler @IndieFlixCEO I got the feeling that @IndieFlix mostly showed shorts, those can’t go on the big platforms can they? #filmin140 -9:14 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@monkeyltd Very interesting indie distro TweetChat going on at http://t.co/AkY97QQ. Check it out. #filmin140 -9:15 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@IndieFlixCEO We have an average of 25 films submitted per day. We accept about 15%. We look for story, prod value, a hook, backstory etc. #filmin140 -9:15 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@FilmThreat RT @IndieFlixCEO: We have an average of 25 films submitted per day. We accept about 15%. We look for story, prod value, hook, etc #filmin140 -9:16 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@IndieFlixCEO we have over 2500 features, shorts and docs. We’re getting a rep for shorts because of the game. I use shorts like appetizers #filmin140 -9:16 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@adamchapnick @leonardzelig Best bet films are current, have some recognizable bragging rights, and perceived sexiness #filmin140 -9:16 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@leonardzelig Which of the channels are more effective in terms of revenue: itunes? Hulu? VOD? DVD? Streaming? I’m curios about VOD #filmin140 -9:16 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@adamchapnick @leonardzelig ..but again, we aim to help EVERYONE get up on the platforms. Because in the end, we’re all often wrong #filmin140 -9:17 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@IndieFlixCEO it’s easy to get people to watch a shorts. Then they start loving indies so we can segue them to independent features #filmin140 -9:17 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@IndieFlixCEO We receive the best revenue on average from hulu #filmin140 -9:17 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@shericandler really? huh RT @IndieFlixCEO: We receive the best revenue on average from hulu #filmin140 -9:18 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@leonardzelig @adamchapnick what about if the film it’s being theatrically distributed in two territories mading over $250K in BO? That counts? #filmin140 -9:18 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@joshfolan @adamchapnick Have you seen films actually dismissed on QC grounds that you disagreed with though – are they overly strict? #filmin140 -9:18 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@adamchapnick @leonardzelig Cable VOD is the best “swing for the fence”. Can fail, but when it hits, it hits biggest. #filmin140 -9:18 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@TheyMakeFilms We look for story, prod value, a hook, backstory etc. #filmin140 http://bit.ly/lhnix3 -9:19 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@IndieFlixCEO We’ve had some nice checks from Cable VOD. I think iTunes is more of a status symbol They even dropped the indie genre to search #filmin140 -9:19 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@adamchapnick @joshfolan @adamchapnick Short answer, in my opinion: yes. #filmin140 -9:19 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@leonardzelig @IndieFlixCEO Interesting, from Hulu? what about VOD? #filmin140 -9:19 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@IndieFlixCEO I agree with Adam on the cable rev – when it hits it hits big #filmin140 -9:19 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@atlfilm365 @IndieFlixCEO is that better revenue based on traffic or percentage? #filmin140 -9:19 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@tbirdsallsmith On Shorts, Features, or both? @IndieFlixCEO: We receive the best revenue on average from hulu #filmin140 -9:20 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@RalphGreco1 Great conversation going on with @shericandler @adamchapnick @IndieFlixCEO on getting indie films on Itunes, Vod, Netflix #filmin140 -9:20 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@Filmin140Panel So should filmmakers ignore iTunes altogether and predominantly focus on Hulu and Cable VOD? #filmin140 -9:20 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@IndieFlixCEO @altfilm365 hulu rev based on traffic which makes for higher CPM’s. hope that makes sense #filmin140 -9:20 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@leonardzelig @adamchapnick Yeah I imagined that with Cable VOD, it’s pretty effective! And there’s no big CGI or Sound… I can watch it on TV #filmin140 -9:20 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@Filmin140Panel Or are there certain films that are just iTunes-friendly for potential success? #filmin140 -9:21 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@IndieFlixCEO @tbirdsallsmith features on hulu do better than shorts #filmin140 -9:21 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@adamchapnick I Find Hulu to be the biggest pleasant surprise, in terms of rev paid, but several of our films do well with iTunes too #filmin140 -9:21 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@IndieFlixCEO Shorts don’t do well on iTunes. #filmin140 -9:21 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@shericandler meaning you have to drive it?RT @IndieFlixCEO: hulu rev based on traffic which makes for higher CPMs. hope that makes sense #filmin140 -9:21 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@Filmin140Panel And where does Netflix come into play here? Is there solid revenue to be had via Netflix? #filmin140 -9:22 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@IndieFlixCEO @shericandler yes it always helps to drive traffic to content on any platform but hulu has a massive built in audience #filmin140 -9:22 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@FilmThreat Hulu’s traffic alone would be a CPM boost to anything on the platform, it would seem #filmin140 -9:23 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@adamchapnick @Filmin140Panel I have very little to offer in terms of Netflix success stories #filmin140 -9:23 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@IndieFlixCEO our best performers on hulu are docs, drugs, sex and cult – sleepy dramas are still good perfs but not the best and take longer #filmin140 -9:23 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@atlfilm365 @IndieFlixCEO Would say the fact that content on Hulu is presented fairly “equal” (there really is no indie section) helps? #filmin140 -9:24 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@adamchapnick @Filmin140PanelBut, Netflix’s discovery engine is second to none, so in that respect you can explode your viewership #filmin140 -9:24 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@joshfolan @adamchapnick Savages. A filmmaker friend had concerns about @agcfilm ‘s chances on Hulu after seeing it at Hoboken this month. #filmin140 -9:24 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@IndieFlixCEO We used to have great success with Netflix. They are now so swamped w/negotiating hllywd content they take FOREVER to respond #filmin140 -9:24 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@leonardzelig Sex Drugs and Docs N’ roll! #filmin140 -9:24 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@adamchapnick A Hulu observation: people will watch free films to decide whether to keep watching, so they pay you for their decision process #filmin140 -9:25 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@Filmin140Panel Is Netflix a revenue share though, for streaming? How does that work? DVDs were flat purchase rates, correct? #filmin140 -9:25 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@IndieFlixCEO @altfilm365 great observation re: hulu. It’s presented by story and popularity so an indie can walk and talk like a hllywd movie #filmin140 -9:25 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@joshfolan Don’t sex and drugs do best universally, regardless of the platform? haha #filmin140 -9:26 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@leonardzelig What’s your take on sites that offer free content? #filmin140 -9:26 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@FilmThreat @joshfolan not in children’s films… #filmin140 -9:26 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@RalphGreco1 @adamchapnick Is it better revenue wiset o use 1platform & direct an audience there or to use the variety of them #filmin140 -9:27 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@adamchapnick @Filmin140Panel Netflix is SVOD, not rev share. They pay a license fee for unlimited streams over a term – usually 1 yr #filmin140 -9:27 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@IndieFlixCEO @joshfolan Comedies of any color do well as does horror on most platforms. We get those requests constantly – except at xmas #filmin140 -9:27 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@Filmin140Panel @adamchapnick Is that license fee a set rate, or is it a per title decision? #filmin140 -9:28 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@adamchapnick @RalphGreco1 I’m in favor of 1 short window on a transactional site to harvest rabid demand, then everywhere at once #filmin140 -9:28 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@joshfolan @FilmThreat Ethics aside, there is likely a large demographic of pre-teen boys that would disagree about sex. #filmin140 -9:28 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@adamchapnick @Filmin140Panel NF licenses are negotiated per title #filmin140 -9:28 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@IndieFlixCEO @RalphGreco1 @adamchapnick– I’m a big believer in multiple platforms to gain the most audience share #filmin140 -9:28 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@shericandler yes! RT @adamchapnick: I’m in favor of 1 short window on a transactional site to harvest rabid demand, then everywhere at once #filmin140 -9:29 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@IndieFlixCEO @Filmin140Panel Netflix licenses films and pay quarterly over 2 years- they also prefer to buy in bulk – several titles at a time #filmin140 -9:29 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@adamchapnick @shericandler I love a Candler stamp of approval on anything! #filmin140 -9:29 PM Jun 22nd, 2011

@atlfilm365 How do you feel about the state of online for films for, by and about women? do they find better audiences? #filmin140 -9:30 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@Filmin140Panel Where does Amazon come in? How does their system stack up? #filmin140 -9:30 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@adamchapnick @shericandler I’m glowing with pride #filmin140 -9:31 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@atlfilm365 Or I should say stronger audiences… #filmin140 -9:31 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@joshfolan @adamchapnick What avg $ range would you say NF licenses deal in with no-name films? #filmin140 -9:31 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@WaterholeMovie Sigh. RT @adamchapnick: Netflix’s discovery engine is second to none, so in that respect you can explode your viewership #filmin140 -9:31 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@IndieFlixCEO @Filmin140Panel we have 385 films on Amazon and the rev share is inconsistent. Generally the rev is so so #filmin140 -9:31 PM Jun 22nd, 2011

@IndieFlixCEO @atlfilm365 Jamie King, made Steal This Film. We put it up on iTunes & hulu after it had been downloaded 6m times. It did well! #filmin140 -9:39 PM Jun 22nd, 2011

@variancefilms @shericandler would you pay $2.99 for something you know is on Netflix? Only if you didn’t know it was on Netflix #filmin140 -9:40 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@variancefilms @shericandler and in turn, if your audience doesn’t know it’s on netflix, you’re doing a bad job of communicating to yr audience. #filmin140 -9:41 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@adamchapnick @variancefilms @shericandler Most viewers make a decision about price when they form their viewing habit, not per film (more): #filmin140 -9:41 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@shericandler @russrusso yeah, try getting that story out of them. Believe me I’ve been trying! #filmin140 -9:41 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@IndieFlixCEO @variancefilms Re: free content. You can’t put the genie back in the bottle but you can repackage films for diff platforms #filmin140 -9:42 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@adamchapnick @variancefilms @shericandler So, they decide that $3.99 is good for them, and iTunes (e.g.) is a good system, so they use THAT #filmin140 -9:42 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@shericandler @variancefilms no because I am a Netflix subscriber, but I rarely watch TV #filmin140 -9:42 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@variancefilms @adamchapnick not so sure about that- lots of folks scan netflix for something that’s “free” before swapping to ppv models #filmin140 -9:42 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@atlfilm365 Not sure if this question was answered, but what about filmmakers that have multiple films out. A help? Or no impact (yet)? #filmin140 -9:42 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@mattwatkajtys @mattwatkajtys: @IndieFlixCEO How are your PPV numbers? I’d assume with 50% of sales, it’s pretty sustainable. #filmin140 -9:43 PM Jun 22nd, 2011

@adamchapnick Or, they never would pay for a film, so they only look on Hulu (e.g.). Or, love the experience of Netflix, so they pay & use THat #filmin140 -9:43 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@atlfilm365 Curious if having several films helps lead a viewer from one film to the next, and/or helps brand the filmmaker online. #filmin140 -9:44 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@shericandler I’ve never torrented anything for the record, but I would free stream the hell out of something like Snagfilms or Youtube #filmin140 -9:45 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@adamchapnick @variancefilms Most people are tied to one habit. Of course some straddle #filmin140 -9:45 PM Jun 22nd, 2011

@russrusso Netflix isn’t the best way to watch films unless you have the connector from computer to TV and ppl don’t always hv that ability #filmin140 -9:45 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@IndieFlixCEO @atlfilm365 if you are a good filmmaker & you brand yourself, yes fans will follow you #filmin140 -9:45 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@variancefilms The next big thing, coming by end of year, is app-based aggregation built into devices. This will change the entire VOD game. #filmin140 -9:46 PM Jun 22nd, 2011

@eraynai @variancefilms can you explain what app-based aggregation is? #filmin140 -9:48 PM Jun 22nd, 2011

@IndieFlixCEO @Fansoffilm ah yes, but the days of “build it and they will come…” are over. building is ez. Audience to pay to watch is hard. #filmin140 -10:35 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@Fansoffilm @IndieFlixCEO that would be a very discouraging thought for all us DIY self publishing filmmakers #filmin140 we must build, they will come -10:38 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@milesmaker @Fansoffilm You can be all the DIY you wannabe but you gotta be where eyes convene en masse–you’ll never attract those eyeballs. #filmin140 -10:42 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@Fansoffilm @IndieFlixCEO don’t think the audience is here yet, the spill over from netflix hasn’t happen yet, indie market not yet there #filmin140 -10:44 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@Fansoffilm @milesmaker many mass convene on netflix doesn’t seem to help to many #indiefilms #filmin140 -10:46 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@milesmaker @Fansoffilm Let VOD platforms spend the marketing $ just hang out & play numbers game vs. your lone solo destination #proliferate #filmin140 -10:46 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@milesmaker @Fansoffilm Brand credibility & trust; give viewers choices where to use a credit card–your player vs. amazon, netflix, et. al. #filmin140 -10:49 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@IndieFlixCEO @Fansoffilm I’m saying build & mkt effectively and they will come. If you have a good story you’ll do well. #filmin140 -10:50 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@Fansoffilm @milesmaker #proliferate love that(-: fan base distribution is where it’s at, like what @lmcnelly is doing, I posted his film #filmin140 -10:51 PM Jun 22nd, 2011

@IndieFlixCEO Not sure indie fans will want to weed through Netflix library to find indies so we’re building the netflix for the indie world. #filmin140 -10:56 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@milesmaker @Fansoffilm #proliferate is exactly right; we cross-platform transmedia concepts–our movie must ultimately cross-platform too! #filmin140 -10:58 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@leonardzelig @Fansoffilm u can do 100% of 5000 hits by urself vs 70% of 50,000 with help of proven platforms… I’m doing the math #Mmm #filmin140 -10:58 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@milesmaker @IndieFlixCEO Please develop similar recommendation engine that doesn’t discriminate studio vs. indies Netflix touts that feature #filmin140 -11:04 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@leonardzelig @Fansoffilm w/ help of @IndieFlix and #distribber your film can reach more people, they have a functional platform running #filmin140 -11:09 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
@leonardzelig @Fansoffilm But hey! Everybody is their own experience. I’d love if you could prove me wrong #filmin140 -11:11 PM Jun 22nd, 2011
