DESIGN THE POSTER FOR “RESIDENT EVIL”

By Film Threat Staff | December 9, 2001

Screen Gems announced the first ever contest to design the movie poster for an upcoming release, “Resident Evil,” the new action movie based on the best selling video game and starring Milla Jovovich and Michelle Rodriguez.
Screen Gems will invite fans to create up to three poster designs, which they will then submit online beginning December 6. The contest will run through December 31. Five semi-finalists will be chosen in January and their artwork will be posted online at the official Resident Evil website where they will be voted upon by the worldwide web audience. Votes will be tallied and the winning poster will be announced in mid-January.
“Involving the Resident Evil fans in our marketing campaign makes perfect sense to us,” said Marc Weinstock, Vice President, Marketing for Screen Gems. “Who better than the game lovers to create the official image for the movie version?” The designer of the winning poster will receive a cash prize and a free screening in their hometown for 100 guests and a commemorative copy of the winning poster – not to mention the nationwide exposure of their poster in theaters everywhere.
Based on the popular video game of the same name, “Resident Evil” stars Milla Jovovich and Michelle Rodriguez as the leaders of a commando-team who must break into “the hive,” a vast underground genetics laboratory operated by the powerful Umbrella Corporation. There a deadly virus has been unleashed, killing the lab’s personnel and resurrecting them as the evil Un-Dead. The team has just three hours to shut down the lab’s supercomputer and close the facility, before the virus threatens to overrun the Earth. This film is directed by Paul Anderson (“Mortal Kombat,” “Event Horizon”).
Screen Gems was established as a new marketing label under Sony Pictures Entertainment in December 1998. 2001 releases Guy Ritchie’s “Snatch” and Gary Hardwick’s “The Brothers.” Screen Gems’ upcoming releases include “Slackers” starring Jason Schwartzman, Devon Sawa and James King; “The Mothman Prophecies” starring Richard Gere, Laura Linney and Debra Messing and “51st State” starring Samuel Jackson.
