The Tribeca Entertainment Event Series has announced that they will launch the First Annual Tribeca Film Festival. Scheduled to take place May 1 – 5, 2002, Robert DeNiro’s Tribeca Entertainment will produce a Festival that will bring together local, national, and international talent to provide the New York City, downtown community with four days of screenings, educational workshops, and various special events.
Robert DeNiro said he hoped the festival would help lower Manhattan recover “in every way.”
“There are businesses down here that need help, small businesses, everything. And we don’t know until we do this where it’ll go,” the legendary actor said. “It’ll take on a life of its own, but it’ll take on a good, positive life and it’ll definitely help in so many ways.”
The Tribeca Film Festival will showcase World Premiere and Independent Films including categories for feature length films, documentaries, shorts, and student works. A jury will present an Emerging Filmmaker Award and an award for Best Short Film. A special presentation of films celebrating New York as a backdrop will be programmed throughout the festival week. The Festival will also offer a public venue for the First Look Film Series, an established, exclusive, monthly screening program that has been the premiere networking event for the New York film community for the past ten years. In addition, the Festival will feature one full day of panel discussions and seminars from Tribeca Entertainment’s prestigious Converge at Tribeca series. A collection of celebrities, producers, directors, and other entertainment toppers will discuss today’s issues facing Hollywood, Independent Film, media and the arts communities. The week will also include a “Coming of Age Film Retrospective,” with an outdoor screening extravaganza, free to the public.
Submission forms for the Short and Student Film Categories will be available beginning January 1, 2002. All submissions must be completed by March 1, 2002.
