From [ Friday, November 10th ] through [ Sunday, November 19th, 2000 ] , the Coolidge Corner Theatre of Boston, in conjunction with Icestorm Video and the University of Massachusetts, will screen a special collection of “lost” cinema from the German Democratic Republic and the DEFA studios.
The films reflect some of the most important moments in cinematic, and world, history. The government-controlled DEFA studios, which were strictly supervised from 1946 to the 1990s, created the original “Jacob the Liar” and launched the film careers of now-legendary German actors like Armin Mueller-Stahl. Many of these films have never been seen in the U.S., and they range in genre from Stalinist documentary to “sun-soaked” musical revue. The series begins with 1946’s “The Murderers are Among Us,” a film-noir thriller that is also the first feature to be produced in postwar Germany.
