It appears that short films about bickering young couples are something of a trend at this year’s Sundance festival. Tahir Jetter’s offering is somewhat different because of the threat of violence underneath the snarling.
A young African American couple wake up in his apartment following a night’s partying. She begins to dress while he walks around half-dressed. Her response: “We had sex and now I’m going home.” His response, however, is to block the front door and physically force her to stay.
Carlton Byrd and Jade Jackson are attractive actors and they invest their roles with a rough chunk of raw emotions. If the short has a bit too much of Film School 101 to its style – a couple of quickie flashbacks to the couple’s happier moments and a flash of dreams worthy of “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” – at least it hits an appropriate nerve in presenting the disastrous conclusion of a brief affair. With more time and a bigger budget, Jetter and his talented actors could create something that is truly remarkable.
