BYOD: BRING YOUR OWN DOC – EPISODE 63: “THIS BAND IS SO GORGEOUS,” “PARADISO” AND “WRONG TIME WRONG PLACE” FROM IDFA

By Ondi Timoner | December 6, 2012

Recorded on location at the International Documentary Film Festival of Amsterdam, Ondi meets with the makers of some of the gems of the fest in the first of two special episodes.

Watch new episodes of BYOD live each week on Tuesdays at noon on TheLip.TV, or tune in for the archived replay starting here on the following Thursday.

ABOUT BYOD:
BYOD is hosted by Ondi Timoner, director of “DIG!,” “JOIN US” and “WE LIVE IN PUBLIC,” and has the rare distinction of winning the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance twice. Each week the show explores a different documentary filmmaker or aspect of filmmaking, with special guests and a live Q&A– diving deep into creative process and the business realities of producing and distributing films. Ondi shares her insider views, opinions, and personal stories, welcoming audience participation. BYOD aims to entertain, inform, and elevate documentaries in general by bringing attention to films and film makers that deserve exposure.

GUEST BIO:
In PARADISO, Jeroen Berkvens highlights, as in an exhilarating rollercoaster ride, all aspects of the Amsterdam pop temple. Still, the experience of the musicians is central, so that the film is also about what it’s like to perform in front of an audience. The staircase from dressing room to the Paradiso stage is not high, but with every step the emotions rise, balancing between fear and euphoria. Also discussed are Jimmy Rosenberg: The Father, The Son, and The Talent, and  A Skin To Few: The Days of Nick Drake.

THIS BAND IS SO GORGEOUS, is directed by Dunstan Bruce-former singer of Chumbawumba-and details SHAM 69’s 2009 tour of China-the first such tour for a British Punk Band.

Using the 2011 Norwegian island shootings as a starting point, John Appel’s WRONG TIME WRONG PLACE shows the role of (sometimes absurd) coincidence in tragedy. How a sequence of small, trivial happenings can mark the thin line between life and death. Two minutes earlier or later can be of critical importance in this story of a bomb’s aftermath.
