The Punk Singer is the new documentary about Kathleen Hanna of Bikini Kill and Le Tigre. Having been a force in punk rock and feminism for over 20 years, Hanna has gone through intense personal struggles that have been largely fought privately until now. Sharing the trailer, and footage from the film, director Sini Anderson joins BYOD to talk about making the film, the connection between Hanna and Kurt Cobain, and the “third wave” of feminism.
Watch new episodes of BYOD live each week on Tuesdays at noon on TheLip.TV, or tune in for the archived replay starting here on the following Thursday.
BYOD is hosted by Ondi Timoner, director of “DIG!,” “JOIN US” and “WE LIVE IN PUBLIC,” and has the rare distinction of winning the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance twice. Each week the show explores a different documentary filmmaker or aspect of filmmaking, with special guests and a live Q&A– diving deep into creative process and the business realities of producing and distributing films. Ondi shares her insider views, opinions, and personal stories, welcoming audience participation. BYOD aims to entertain, inform, and elevate documentaries in general by bringing attention to films and film makers that deserve exposure.
Sini Anderson has worked in film for over ten years as a producer, first assistant director, and creative consultant to directors on such films as BY HOOK OR BY CROOK, MANGO KISS, JADED CONSUMER LOOKING FOR SOMETHING MORE, FUMBLING TOWARDS ROCK: THE MIRIAM AND HELEN STORY, KARMA CALLING, and MAGGOTS AND MEN, among others. She has directed short form pieces such as Jolie Holland’s “All The Girls” music video and Melissa Febos’s experimental book/video short “Whip Smart.” THE PUNK SINGER is Anderson’s first feature length documentary.
