Alabama Moving Image Association (AMIA), the organization that produces the nationally recognized Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival, has announced the dates and venue for the inaugural Birmingham Shout, a gay and lesbian film festival of Alabama, according to Erik Jambor, executive director and co-founder of AMIA.
The weekend celebration of gay and lesbian films will take place on April 28 & 29 at WorkPlay, located at 500 23rd Street South.
“Birmingham has truly embraced the film festival concept and supports the creativity of the independent film spirit,” Jambor said. “We are excited to be able to answer the request from the community for a film festival dedicated to gay and lesbian content.”
The festival will showcase narrative features, documentaries and short films in WorkPlay’s theatre and soundstage. Opening night tickets are $15 each, and include an opening night reception and post-screening event. Individual tickets for Saturday films are $5 each. Discounts are available for seniors and students with valid ID. Tickets will go on sale to the public on April 1.
“It is a privilege to be able to bring these unique voices to Birmingham through the art of film,” Jeremy Erdreich, AMIA vice president and chair of the executive steering committee said. “We recognized a need and stepped up to fulfill it.”
The complete festival line up will be announced in March.
