…At the candy factory, actually. Yes, this spoof of “mental hygiene” films circa 1945-1960 is big on the mildly humorous innuendo, mostly about gay sex.
Robert Gant (“Queer as Folk”) stars as Billy’s dad. He’s is skilled at tossing salad, and is unconcerned that every guy at his daughter’s school would like to gift her with a pearl necklace. Is Billy going to grow-up to be a fudge-packer like dear old dad? The answer is not driven home with very great force. (See, once you start on this path, everything is innuendo.) One thing is sure, I won’t be eating any fudge for awhile.
Written and directed by Jamie Donahue, “Billy’s Dad” is only sporadically funny, but its recreation of educational films from the gray flannel suit era is better than most, and star Robert Gant’s happily clueless demeanor is worth the price of admission. But then I got in free.
