Andy and Zach are mismatched friends who share a cramped New York apartment. Andy is fat, balding and (to be charitable) socially awkward and is trying to locate a girlfriend via something called MyCupid.com. Zach is slender, handsome and much more sophisticated than Andy, and he has a real girlfriend with whom he is planning to take up residence. Adding to the pressure of the men’s rocky relationship is the Christmas season – Andy wants to shoot video footage from New York’s Rockefeller Center and e-mail it to his mother, while Zach’s lack of holiday spirit is pronounced.
Andy finally meets a girl online and he has a plan to shoot video footage with her at Rockefeller Center’s extravagant display. But their offline date is a disaster, and Zach grudgingly agrees to fill in as the star of Andy’s holiday video.
It isn’t entirely clear if Nick Paley’s short is supposed to be funny or creepy. It is turns out to be neither. Andy’s clumsiness is framed in a manner to suggest that he’s the ultimate geek, but there is nothing very amusing about that. Views of a kitchen knife and irritating Christmas music offer the hint of a future bloodbath, but the film is never that adventurous. By the closing credits, the only emotion this dreary and amateurish effort generates is a dull grunt of “Huh?”
It was actually a wonderful film about loyalty and friendship. It spoke to the obligation between friends and the loneliness of adulthood. I thought the film was very relevant, sweet, and sad.
