AFA ATTACKS NEA

By Film Threat Staff | June 10, 2000

The American Family Association is on the attack against the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) this week. They are specifically objecting to NEA support of “homosexual film festivals.”
The Department of Interior Appropriations bill (in which the NEA is funded)is on the floor of the U.S. House the week of June 12. This is interesting timing — the San Francisco International Lesbian & Gay Film Festival www.frameline.org/festival starts on June 15th.
The festival, the oldest and largest gay film festival in the world, had its NEA funding pulled back in the early ’90s and hadn’t received NEA funds again until this year. This year’s grant will help produce their Persistent Vision conference, a major international queer media conference to be held in conjunction with the festival’s 25th anniversary in 2001.
To help out, contact your U.S. Representative today and urge them to support any amendment to increase funds for the National Endowment for the Arts.
