By Mark Bell | March 27, 2013

The 2nd Annual Victoria TX Independent Film Festival, running April 4-7, 2013, has announced its full schedule and lineup. From the official press release:

Following the success of its inaugural run, VTxIFF 2013 returns April 4-7th with 70 films screening in 7 venues, and expands its artistic reach to include 12 bands recording live albums on vinyl, 2 murals, an art exhibit, and a midnight bike race through Victoria.

Berlin artist Stohead will open the fest on Thursday at 6:00 p.m. In conjunction with his first show in the US, he will create two murals in downtown Victoria and several other pieces that will be displayed during the fest.

Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea, a poignant documentary from Australia told through the eyes of one young Afghan girl among hundreds of asylum seekers, will kick off the films at 6:30 p.m.

Watchtower by Turkish Pelin Esmer, following at 8:00 p.m., premiered at Toronto and went on to receive several awards. It is a beautifully executed glimpse into the daily routines of two desperate people, brought together under harrowing circumstances, who form an unusual bond that may save them.

The mood lightens at 10:00 p.m. with Culture Shock, another action-packed thrill ride from the “best-kept secret in American cinema”, indie Steve Balderson. Four college grads embark on their first trip overseas and find themselves caught in an international crime ring. Followed by a Q&A with Balderson and stars Starina Johnson and Mark Booker.

Screenings will be held at 7 different locations including the Leo J. Welder Center for the Performing Arts, the Victoria Fine Arts Center, the Golden Gecko, One O’Connor Plaza and the Nave Museum. Special events for children, featuring magic shows and graffiti painting, will complement the screenings at the Children’s Discovery Museum and the Texas Zoo over the weekend.

Directors, actors and producers of several of the featured films will be in attendance for Q&A discussions following their screenings.

Presented by Film Exchange, an international film festival network spanning Texas, New Orleans, Brooklyn, Finland and Hamburg, the four-day event is designed to inspire and champion independent artists, while introducing innovative, passionate work to the community of Victoria.
