Writer/director Kendall York’s Video Clerk taps into something any working person can understand — being called in on your day off when you’d rather be anywhere else.
A clerk (Kendall York) at Video Express was supposed to have a few days off. Instead, he’s behind the counter, dealing with whatever crazy customer walks through the door. The first customer (Ron Preston) comes in hot — he rented the wrong Godzilla movie. You know…he wanted the American one!
“A clerk at Video Express was supposed to have a few days off.”
The next customer (Marla Wise) has a different kind of problem. She’s returning Deadpool, Sausage Party, and Ted because someone — apparently the video store — led her to believe they were suitable for children. And that’s just the beginning. Harry Potter is about witchcraft. The rest of the modern catalog isn’t much better. By the time she’s done making her case, the poor clerk in the middle just wants to go home…and maybe get the holidays off.
Video Clerk is a fast in-and-you’re-out comedic short about the foibles of running a modern video store. On one side, it’s about everything American; on the other, it’s about not renting films by canceled celebrities. I love the DIY nature of the short. There are quick AI exteriors to open and close the short, and very cheesy green-screen effects for the meat of the sketch.
