Thieves

The same goes for every character in Thieves, save for the two FBI agents. Dan and Sam have a compelling backstory; though to be fair, everyone gets a backstory, even if it is just a line or two to explain specific actions. No, it is how their past informs their present issues, how they grapple with what to do over the information given to them by Lily. Where it all leads them that makes them the most compelling characters.

“From a thrills-and-action standpoint, the pace is fantastic.”

But, characterization issues aside, the script has loads of fun with its numerous turns and twists. Some of these will be easy to figure for those well-versed in this genre. But a number of them are either shocking or so well handled that it being a cliche is not much of an issue. It is in these details that Thieves truly shines. It is having so much fun spinning back in on itself and taking the viewer on a ride that it is infectious. It is a damn enjoyable movie to experience unfold, and Winn’s excellent directing ensures that it does so in a compelling manner.

Thieves may not be the most original film out there. It may also only have two characters with any proper arc to them, despite having a pretty big roster. However, the cast all share solid chemistry, the plot takes enough detours to be interesting, and the lively atmosphere all come together for a very entertaining film.
