We see senators Dick Durbin and Cory Booker during the confirmation hearing of Attorney General Jeff Sessions about changing these laws, that even Sessions himself admits are unfair. The senators are trying to pass a “First Step” bill, which would allow people who were formerly expected to serve a life sentence for a minor sentence will get their sentence commuted. Several ex-prisoners had their sentences commuted in one of the last acts of our beloved former president, Barack Obama. As one may know, even Donald Trump commuted the sentences of seventeen people at the behest of Kim Kardashian. Kardashian was working with Miangel Cody and The Decarceration Collective on some of those cases.
“…does what all good documentaries should do, which is to give a face and a name to a person facing a problem that people may not think that much about…”
The greatest thing about The Third Strike is when we see all five of the former inmates that are featured in the documentary get released from prison and can return to their families. In one instance, Edward Douglas even gets to join the Decarceration Collective in meeting with Senator Cory Booker. Booker is a champion of this cause and says that there is still much to be done to improve the Federal Justice System. He thinks that any sort of mandatory minimums should be done away with in reference to drug charges, and in some cases, I certainly agree that he’s right.
The Third Strike is a lean 90-minutes, but that’s because it gets to the point and doesn’t take any detours from the matter at hand, which is letting us know that these outdated forms of punishment and incarceration still exist and that there’s something that needs to be done about it. The Decarceration Collective is leading the charge, but it takes more than just them to get all the wrongly incarcerated men and women out of prison. There was a disproportionate amount of poor people and minorities that got targeted by the three-strikes law, and they all deserve justice as well. Check out The Third Strike to see if you agree.

Loved the doc and the results. Loving worthy people. Great work, all of you. I wondered though, when it was done. Wouldn’t the fact that around the Reagan era l believe, privatization of the penal system was initiated and in order to reach quotas for Government funding the results are obvious. Also chase the actual investors and their associates and associations. Go gett’m
