Do you remember when you were a child, and you would watch your favorite television show or film, get your toys and replicate it as you were watching? Well, a group of guys did that with the Star Wars: A New Hope and it is not only genius but it is awesome! Troy Durrett, Lance Robson, and Jon Ramos, three lifelong friends and Star Wars fans used Stars Wars figures and toys- mainly, Kenner figures, but not always- to recreate a stop-motion retelling of A New Hope. They set their short fan film to a read-along storybook, a 45 RPM, for those interested. They’ve titled their retro-styled movie The Star Wars.

There’s no need to explain the storyline of A New Hope to anyone of you because if you don’t know it by now, then read a history book because it happened a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away. Suffice to say the trio does an admirable job at hitting all the major beats of the iconic plot. One of the best moments in the short film was when the destruction of the Death Star is replicated. To do this, the directors shot the ships from the Kenner line but also include footage from the Star Wars: The Arcade Game from AtariIt was an unexpected treat and just another way to show their genius.

“…used Stars Wars figures and toys…to recreate a stop-motion retelling of A New Hope.”

The one complaint I have is not really a complaint but more of an observation. During one scene, Leia is going face-to-face with Darth Vader, and it is a Barbie version of Leia, but later on, it is the Kenner version of Leia that is used to match the rest of the figures. It was noticeable to me because of the hair, but it did not take away from how cool of an idea this short film is.

The Star Wars is nothing but good fun. It will bring back childhood memories for anyone, whether you were a child in the ’70s or not. We all replicated our favorite shows and films, and these guys brought it to life.
