Writer/director David Cole’s Lion of God is the kind of personal comic-book epic that doesn’t just ask what happens when a man finds faith, but also what happens when he discovers he may have been part of heaven’s war all along.
Lion of God follows David, a software engineer working in big tech, who nearly dies after contracting COVID without being vaccinated. In the throes of near death, he sees alternate versions of himself in an ethereal mirror, blurring the lines of dream and reality. These visions of his previous life are so vivid that David begins to believe he is connecting with an ancient identity dating back millennia.
David sees that he began as an immortal guardian angel who walked the astral plane since the dawn of time. Wielding the Flames of the Seven Rays, he discovers that he is heaven’s champion against the forces of darkness.
“The Lion lived on Earth as a human, unaware of who he was, and awakened upon the first appearance of a demonic threat.”
The story serves as a spiritual awakening for writer, director, and artist David Cole. The Lion of God is an angelic warrior standing between innocent humans and demonic threats. The Lion lived on Earth as a human, unaware of who he was, and awakened upon the first appearance of a demonic threat. Lion of God Issue #1, written and illustrated by David Cole, presents this blended narrative of personal transformation and cosmic spiritual warfare.
With Lion of God, not only does he bring his beautiful illustrations in comic-book form, but he also does quite an admirable job bringing it to life through motion comics. I will say it’s not perfect. The subtitles really bother me. I kind of want something a little more comic book-ish. The voiceover needs to feel like more than just an audio recording.
As a story, Cole does a good job of telling an epic story of gods and monsters. It may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but at least in the first issue, it’s engaging and makes you want to learn more.
