The Jews have been celebrating Passover for centuries, but this year it’s quite different. Filmmaker Nicole Brevard explores the true meaning of this Passover in her short film, The Last Supper.

For three years, the disciples have followed their master, Jesus (Angelo Martin), from town to town, learning from him along the way. They arrive in Jerusalem for what they think is a Passover celebration, but Jesus carries a heavy weight into their last meal together.

Jesus and the disciples gather in an upper room, and the first thing Jesus does is wash their feet. The disciples think he’s crazy because they should be washing his feet instead, but Jesus stresses the importance of servanthood and implores them to serve one another.

Jesus then, in symbolic fashion, leads them through what Christians today know as Communion. He gives them bread to eat, signifying the sacrifice of his body for their sins, and wine to drink, representing the blood he is about to shed to wash their sins away. Of course, none of them know the tragic and joyous events that are about to happen.

“They arrive in Jerusalem for what they think is a Passover celebration, but Jesus carries a heavy weight into their last meal together.”

As a Christian myself, I consider the Last Supper one of the most impactful moments in the ministry of Jesus Christ. He lays it all on the line, knowing he is about to die, and this is what he wants his disciples to remember.

The Last Supper features an all-black cast, and some might criticize the so-called “race swapping.” Believers understand that Jesus’ message was meant for everyone, regardless of skin color, and is just as meaningful no matter where in the world you hear or see this story.

While The Last Supper is a faithful and beautiful dramatization of that night, I have to call out the sound problems. The volume is uneven and inconsistent, and the overcorrection on some lines is noticeable. You do have to overlook obvious production weaknesses to grasp the overall impact of one of Jesus’ greatest messages, told in a heartfelt way by filmmaker Nicole Brevard.
