Wrapping his mind around the theme of loneliness, writer/director Xiao Ma collapses the walls of the natural order and tells a sweet story of an invisible man and a blind girl in the short film The Invisible Man and the Blind Girl.
After years of being ignored by everyone, including his parents, William (Bryan Schany) has become invisible…first emotionally and now physically. Willian makes a living going from door-to-door with a voice-command robotic lawn mowing service. The catch is that he is pushing the lawn mower, but no one sees him.
Moving on to the next job, William knocks on the door of Emma (Ashlyn Jade Lopez) and her family. Emma is blind, uh…visually impaired. But for some divine reason, Emma can see William. She sees a crisp, clear image of him against a background of darkness.

For once, William is seen and the two strikes up a friendship. William, in turn, helps Emma sees the world through his eyes. He explains the joys of movies and performs Charlie Chaplain routine. Emma helps William by helping him find clients for his lawn mowing business.
At just under 16 minutes, Ma tells a delightful and hopeful tale of two loners finding one another with a sweet ending just to punch at your heartstrings. The story of friendship is portrayed wonderfully by Scharny and Lopez. Scharny shows the joys of being seen for the first time, if only for a brief moment. The Invisible Man and the Blind Girl never gets sappy and is an excellent palette cleanser for the usual dark cynicism, we’re used to at Film Threat.
