NOW IN THEATERS! Twenty years is a long time in fashion, and while most of the world has changed, some things remain the same. David Frankel’s The Devil Wears Prada 2 brings Andy, Miranda, and Emily back to Runway just when they’ve all had enough distance to realize how much has actually changed.
Not even a minute in, Runway is in trouble as Miranda (Meryl Streep) greenlit a story about a new manufacturer, only to find out they employ child labor. The news went viral, and it’s about to take down Runway magazine…except it’s really Runway, the website. Unless something can be done right now, Miranda, Nigel (Stanley Tucci), and the magazine will go out of business. Speaking of being out of business, at a press award ceremony, Andy Sachs (Anne Hathaway) is about to receive a prestigious award for a series of articles she wrote. Just before receiving the award, the magazine she represented just went out of business. Great timing. In a stroke of genius, the CEO of Runway’s parent company, Irv Ravits (Tibor Feldman), and his son (B.J. Novak), hire a newly unemployed Andy to be the features editor for Runway.
“Miranda has no recollection of Andy working for her, turning what would have been a joyous reunion into an icy cold reception.”
What would have been a joyous reunion turns into an icy cold reception when Miranda has no recollection of Andy working for her. Nigel certainly does, and he helps smooth things over…though badly. Andy first drafts an apology, which is a good first move, but hardly anyone reads it. Miranda notes that even if Andy is a brilliant writer, no one cares what she has to say. Also, Miranda takes Andy on an apology tour with the magazine’s sponsors, starting with their rep at Christian Dior, who happens to be…Emily (Emily Blunt)!!! She’s back.
So, I’ll be upfront. I’m not the biggest fan of The Devil Wears Prada, and I had to watch the first movie two days ago just to remember what happened. Let’s also be real. I’m not the audience for this movie. Which begs the question, why am I reviewing The Devil Wears Prada 2? Because Film Threat would love to have more female reviewers…but that’s neither here nor there.
"…It's Fantasy Island on steroids."
