Prepare to dive face-first into the cinematic mosh pit of tomorrow with the punk body horror feature Sugar Rot, which was written, produced, edited, and directed by Canadian punk auteur Becca Kozak. Candy (Chloe MacLeod) likes to drink up, drug up, and go to punk shows by the band Daddy Issues. To support her activities, she works a side gig stripping while she holds down her main job, which is working at an ice cream shop. The shop’s owner, Barbie (Michela Ross), is constantly recovering from plastic surgery procedures performed by her husband, Dr. Herschell Gordon (Charles Lysne).

When Candy intentionally bleeds into a tub of ice cream to retaliate against a lecherous customer, Barbie is forced to order more frozen confectionery. On Barbie’s day off, which she spends with Dr. Gordon trying to conceive, Candy has to deal with the evil ice cream man (Tyson Storozinski) herself. The vile ice cream man corners her in the freezer and rapes her with his discolored oozing member.

“Candy is oozing tasty pus from her puss…”

Candy finds out she is pregnant and immediately starts shopping for an abortion. However, the only doctor in town is Dr. Gordon, and he feels abortion is murder, so he refuses Candy’s request, even when she sleeps with him. Meanwhile, Candy is having a strange discharge that is brightly colored and tastes delicious. Candy’s boyfriend, Sid (Drew Foster), starts biting her skin, saying her flesh tastes so sweet.

Soon, Candy is oozing tasty pus from her puss and several other wounds, making her irresistible to any man or woman who tastes her. Kozak’s feature narrative film debut is a plutonium-grade flashpoint in the history of punk culture movies. It takes a genius to gaze into Street Trash for inspiration and then reach for a spoon. Edible splatter is something that never occurred to me, even when I was eating a human heart Jello mold in front of Cannibal Holocaust at the Alamo Drafthouse 25 years ago.
