It’s a question that the judiciary in India has often failed to clarify. Over the years, accounts of some horrifying rape cases have been covered exhaustively. Still, the courts have prolonged the hearings or could not deliver justice altogether. The character of Siya screams about such issues that have recently come to light and bring forth a picture that is far closer to the truth.

The film’s strength is its narrative, which despite a familiar premise, impresses from the get-go. A girl fighting for her rights in a repressive society and cultural backdrop makes for a strong and empowering character. But Siya navigates the unsaid and undocumented reality, which pushes the protagonist into vulnerability, thus, swaying away from the typical depiction of victimhood. Instead of calling for a believable and fierce battle, Siya shows what the ensuing struggle truly looks like and how it could lead to further devastation. As hinted at in the trailers, the film’s premise will give viewers a confident backdrop for what could be in store. But thanks to the writing and intelligent characters, the film unexpectedly proves everyone wrong and makes it more than worthwhile.

“…a well-crafted suspense thriller that strongly advocates for change…”

Mundra and Rizvi have made a well-crafted suspense thriller that strongly advocates for change in the judicial system. In one sequence, Siya provides her account of the incident. In an empty courtroom with an unsupportive and cold judge presiding, her emotional trauma is amplified as she receives zero care while being forced to relive the horrors she just escaped. Siya is filled with many striking commentaries, which do a great job of provoking the audience to give serious thought to these heinous acts and the judicial system.

Debuting as the titular character is Pooja Pandey. Pooja is compelling in all the heart-wrenching moments in a challenging role. Her portrayal pours out genuine emotions in moments of happiness around her family and in times of hardship. During interrogations, as the cops try to break Siya, Pooja expertly reveals all her emotions. Leading an ensemble with Vineet Kumar Singh, Pooja gives a good glimpse of what more could come from her in the future.

Siya is a story heard across India daily, yet things remain unchanged. The film tackles that ignorance and sends a strong and clear message. It’s not intentionally enlightening, but the style of narration makes it highly engaging. Though, the film has its flaws in a few technical. Still, they are made up for by the overall rendering of heartbreak and emotion the cast and crew bring to the screen. And most importantly, it’s an essential film, mandatory for all generations to watch to unfold the reality behind gimmicks of corruption and politics.

Siya screened at the 2022 International Film Festival of India.
