There’s no tougher job in public service than being a cop. You join for all the right reasons, and over time it feels like the rewards are few.
Rookie officer Ethan Hart (Adam Wesley) is on his final step before becoming a full-fledged LAPD officer. His training officer, Riley Dawson (Patrick Scott Lewis), is a veteran whose jaded cynicism rubs Ethan the wrong way. Hart’s first test is a call at a convenience store where the duo must defuse a standoff between a drunk customer, an angry clerk, and a hostile owner. What starts out as a harmless situation becomes borderline police brutality on Dawson’s part. When Ethan questions the call, Riley makes it personal and brings up Ethan’s late father, a cop who died in the line of duty. Ethan reports Riley to Sgt. Morales (John Delaney), requesting a new trainer. Instead, he walks out of that meeting with the same partner and no way around him.

By the next shift, Riley’s sarcasm from the day before has softened into what might be an apology, and the two finally start talking. The moment brings the partners to a mutual understanding. Ethan sees the grief buried under Riley’s cynicism, and Riley sees the foundation behind Ethan’s idealism. This newfound respect is tested when a reckless driver forces them back into action.
In her director’s statement, Sisi Liu says she’s always been drawn to crime dramas because they reveal people at their most vulnerable — the pressure strips away all of our false pretenses, and our true character comes out. As Liu puts it, Shift is about “lighting your own path in the dark, even after the darkness has changed what that light means.”
What Liu has delivered is an indie short that reads like a crime procedural, rivaling any TV cop drama. Yes, the low budget shows at times, but what she is able to do is not only construct a story in which one plot element leads to the next, but also capture each character’s heart without bloated dialogue. The main contrast of the film is the Boy Scout optimism of the rookie on the force butting up against the cynicism of a cop who’s been on the beat way too long.
