Separated

Trump is the same man who backed down from the intense public outrage after it was all exposed by reporters such as Soboroff and signed a bill to remove family separation. Errol Morris has gone to Twitter/X to state his displeasure for NBC, seemingly caving to Trump, stating, “Why is my movie not being shown on NBC prior to the election? It is not a partisan movie. It’s about a policy that was disgusting and should not be allowed to happen again. Make your own inferences.”

“…may be Errol Morris’s most important film…”

Errol Morris’s The Thin Blue Line is my favorite documentary of all time for the intrigue and humor that he infused into a murder mystery, but Separated may be his most important film due to the ramifications of the cost if we do not learn from it. This film is rage-inducing and difficult to watch if you happen to care about children being abused as a political tool. Hearing the audio of toddlers screaming for their parents while a guard makes fun of them should piss you off.

The film documents that over four thousand kids were separated from their families due to this policy. Jonathan White spearheaded a committee to return the children to their parents after the policy was over, but over five years later, there are still over a thousand kids who have not been returned to their parents because of the poor record keeping at the start of this mess. These kids have lived in crowded, prison-like conditions while being orphans for far too long, and this all happened in America, not some Third World Nation. Kudos to Morris and Soboroff for telling the story, which is hopefully never repeated.
