Of course, as with all films in this genre, the murder scenes are the major focus and the ones to which all our eyes are drawn. And King delivers some pretty satisfying shots, with several graphic ideas that, while not innovative, are filmed with skill. To recount them would be to ruin the best part of the cake, but there’s plenty of blood to go around!

“…a campy, fun and easily entertaining Z-movie…”

Like all horror projects of this caliber, they are heavily influenced by the works that inspired them, and Screamwalkers is no exception. From the killer’s costume directly inspired by Scream to the many deliberately grotesque steps and situations reminiscent of Nightmare on Elm Street, Sean King uses many of these mythical films to fuel his narrative. Speaking of which, the filmmaker adds a historical and fantastical dimension to his tale with a mummy from ancient Egypt. It’s a narrative very similar to what we might find in the adventures of Indiana Jones, and there’s no doubt that King wanted to draw on this type of story to add a layer to the mystery overhanging this city. But while the idea of feeding the film with elements of the 80s is a good one, Screamwalkers is sometimes thin on explanations between its fantastic and realistic sides, making the narrative rather predictable and conventional.

Although there’s still room for improvement in certain areas, Screamwalkers succeeds on the ground chosen by its director: being a campy, fun, and easily entertaining Z-movie—the kind of film you return to the video store the next day with a smile on your face.
