But how is My Boyfriend is a Superhero!? as a film? Regarding the AI, you can see the progression over Jackson’s filmography: it’s getting better over time, but there are still problems. The main one is character integrity and stylistic consistency. With the exception of Abigail, characters don’t always look the same from scene to scene. Abigail manages to look consistent by the end.
There are two major problems with My Boyfriend is a Superhero!?. The first is the inconsistent animation style. Abigail is pretty much a version of Elastigirl from The Incredibles in terms of looks. I understand that when we are watching the television show The Eagle, it is supposed to look like live action, but in the real world, characters from Pixar, Disney, Warner Bros., and live action commingle. Hooroo needs to pick a style and run with it.

The other problem is the blistering pace at which the story moves. Edits fly fast and furious along with the dialogue behind them. It is hard to hold on to the story with its Mad Men-like dialogue. Scenes have to breathe. We have to listen to a conversation, its lines and words, and digest it. Once an important piece of information is dropped, we’re immediately on to the next. We’ve got to slow things down. Honestly, it muddies the main story, making it difficult to latch onto. I’m sure this is also a limitation of AI, but in conversations, the characters’ backgrounds and settings aren’t consistent, as if they’re in two different locations.
In the final analysis, it is still difficult for me to recommend AI films like My Boyfriend is a Superhero!? when compared to other “regular” films. It’s worth seeing to understand where we’re at in the medium and the potential for the future. It’s also worth watching just for the “pick a protagonist” element. If you’re curious, go for it, but it won’t win over the AI skeptic.
