Serkan Aktas’ Mirrorty is a sci-fi short film that explores isolation, detachment, and the blurring of reality. A man (Onur Soyal) lives alone in a city plagued by mysterious disappearances. He sits in his messy apartment late at night, snacking on pizza and chips, watching a dog talent show. Then, the news breaks in and reports a young woman (Irem Celik) has gone missing, adding to the thirty people who have already vanished over the past year, with no connections between the cases.

The night takes a surreal turn when the missing woman appears trapped inside his mirror. She pleads with him to help her escape. Instantly, the man is jolted awake, realizing it was a dream. Yet, looking back at the mirror, his reflection is not in sync with his reality. He is soon flung into the mirror, which serves as a portal to a parallel universe. The situation grows more unnerving when a shadowy figure materializes next to him in the mirror. He is now confronted with the eerie possibility that his fate may be linked to the mystery on the other side of his mirror.

Onur Soyal trapped inside the mirror in Mirrorty

A chilling scene from Mirrorty as Onur Soyal’s character realizes the mirror is a portal to a terrifying parallel universe.

“…his reflection is not in sync with his reality…”

Serkan Aktas’s Mirrorty messes with your mind a bit. My interpretation explores the idea that as we watch the world from our TVs and screens, we slowly become more and more detached from the real world around us. Over time, our personal reality takes on its own twisted meaning.

Aktas also accomplishes the difficult feat of creating a sci-fi story on an indie budget. He shifts from reality to sci-fi fantasy with great ease, and lead actor Onur Soyal is the perfect conduit. His look from surprise to uneasiness is spot on.
