The best and most inspired stories often come from the old “number two.” Absolutely, not true, but Jake Hunsicker’s thriller short, Meatloaf and Pie at the Sunset Cafe, spotlights the power of a good fart joke.

A crook and a cop have been playing cat and mouse for years. The cop wants to know what happened to his partner and the crook just wants his years of running to end at all costs.

“A crook and a cop have been playing cat and mouse for years.”

The pair decide to meet at the Sunset Cafe, and both have plans beyond ordering meatloaf and pie. Before the meeting, the crook’s accomplice, The Smoker, armed with a shotgun, is to storm the meeting when the crook utters the words, “Are you sure you don’t want to order the meatloaf?”

Meatloaf and Pie at the Sunset Cafe is a silly send-up of the old crime movie stand-off—that game of chess where the next move leads to a bloody mess. Hunsicker sets the stage beautifully, introducing the unforeseen element of diarrhea and a truly explosive moment at the end.

The short boasts a small cast of five, who bring their own takes to the characters and round out a complicated yet simple revenge story. There’s a level of fun that comes out in the interplay between actors that helps guide us to a satisfying and bloody end.
