I’m a bit in a quandary. I want to say a lot about Christopher James Cramer’s short film, Love is a Virus, but at the same time, I don’t want to spoil it. This is a zombie love story that must be seen with fresh eyes.
A woman finds herself in her boarded-up apartment — her only shelter from the apocalypse outside. Wandering the living room, she waxes on about the intense feelings of falling in love for the first, second, and third time until she finally finds her true love in harrowing times. I did mention this is a zombie love story, right? Soon we find our protagonist slipping back and forth between reality and the dream-like state that only love — zombie love — can produce.
“…slipping back and forth between reality and the dream-like state that only love — zombie love — can produce.”
Minor spoiler. Filmmaker Cramer takes us into a state of mind somewhere between being normal and undead. Set over the haunting voiceover of our protagonist, Love is a Virus switches our point-of-view between these two states and all within the context of romantic love. In a genre that’s been told over and over again, Cramer finds a way to tell his story in his way for six minutes of hope and horror.
