You will be off to the races once the magic mushrooms kick in while watching the quite funny Canadian drama Lost Lake Confessions, written and directed by Jason William Lee. Based on real events, JD (Jerome Velinsky) comes back to Canada after having left years ago to direct movies in Los Angeles. He has gathered together his best friends growing up for a weekend away at the remote Lost Lake, which is hours away from the closest town.

One bud, Irish personal trainer Connie (Christopher Gerard), keeps arguing with another bud, crypto tycoon Ray (Dayleigh Nelson), just like they have since they were kids. Another bud, Hill (Khamisa Wilsher), keeps stoic about the whole thing as she is studying stoicism as a lifestyle. While Ray is saying goodbye to his wife, Lori (Gigi Saul Guerrero), on the phone before the signal is lost, they almost miss their turn down the dirt road to Lost Lake.

“JD reveals that his cancer symptoms have returned soon enough since remission to reduce his chances of surviving another battle with it.”

The area is utterly beautiful and completely cut off from civilization, so everyone commences to getting f****d up. While pounding down the liquor with their baked beans, JD’s pals notice that he is deeply preoccupied. JD reveals that his cancer symptoms have returned soon enough since remission to reduce his chances of surviving another battle with it. JD is resigned to his fate, as he doesn’t want to suffer through chemo again. This puts everyone in a dark mood that leads to further inebriation.

As night falls, out rises a gleaming plastic baggie of magic mushrooms for the group to consume, which results best described as really f*****g interesting. As the weekend progresses, the revelations keep coming faster than the opening of the next beer can.

Most everyone complains about the taste of hallucinogenic mushrooms, including the characters in this movie. I really don’t see what all the fuss is about, even if it makes others vomit. Just like managing the taste of straight Kentucky bourbon, I tend to concentrate more on the experience of a substance’s effects rather than the ingestion. Now, the taste of magic mushrooms eaten out of someone else’s vomit wasn’t pleasant but still doable.

"…was floored by how cleanly and effectively the magic mushroom scene was done"
