SXSW FILM FESTIVAL 2021 REVIEW! When traveling abroad, it’s only polite to learn some of your destination’s language and customs before you arrive. In Kayla Abuda Galang’s short film, Learning Tagalog with Kayla, Kayla takes five minutes to teach you some conversational phrases and common expressions when visiting her home country of the Philippines.
“…to teach you some conversational phrases and common expressions…of the Philippines.”
Shot like a low-budget, public access video style, Kayla opens with standard phrases like “Hello” and “How are you?” “I’m fine.” She then meanders into her love of baking, her roommate situation, favorite Final Fantasy characters, and a few personal facts.
Learning Tagalog with Kayla is short and concise, and its humor is very dry. It goes a little dark, but you’ll get the point. Kayla Abuda Galang has a strong presence and good comedic timing, which counts for a lot in a short film like this.
Learning Tagalog With Kayla screened at the 2021 SXSW Film Festival.
"…Galang has a strong presence and good comedic timing..."
I hope to go there someday.
