La Pandora’s Box, the new immersive VR concert film from writer-director Nadeem Majdalany, takes the old myth of Pandora and turns it into something you experience, not just watch. It’s built around an original score Majdalany composed himself and wrapped in narration about connection, chaos, and the choices that shape a life. Strap on your VR headset. It’s an ambitious swing for an independent production, and once you’re inside it, that ambition is the whole point.
La Pandora’s Box opens with a godlike narrator who says the universe is connected, light and shadow work together, and beginnings and endings fold into each other rather than existing apart. Shapes shift and change form, but the energy underneath them never stops moving.
We are then transported to the dawn of creation—or more accurately, the center of a concert. A small orchestra surrounds us in full 360° VR. We also see a box…La Pandora’s Box. Next to the box, a dancing spirit interacts with the box and the performers. As the piece progresses, we see images of a giant asteroid hitting Earth, causing devastation, then life slowly evolving over centuries.

The narration introduces the film’s central image: a tree of life representing creation, a river representing its movement, and the box itself holding the energy that drives it all. Free will, the narrator says, decides which way the box rolls—and what kind of life that motion produces. Later, the voice speaks about hope, wondering whether hope needs to look like perfection or whether it’s just another piece of the chaos trapped inside the box. Amid the chaos, we move back to find harmony.
Nadeem Majdalany’s La Pandora’s Box is a whimsical performance piece. You will need a VR headset to watch this, or you’ll only get part of the experience. It’s fully immersive as you sit at the center of the action, which unfolds all around you.
As an art piece, this original orchestral work by Majdalany features moments of chaos and destruction at the beginning and leads to harmony at the end. It’s very much a performance piece, and you’ll need to approach it that way, with dancers performing interpretive, lyrical movement to tell the story. It is a low-budget production, so the CG background looks a bit early-2000s in its technology, but it creates the right setting for its time in Earth’s history.
I bought a pair of VR glasses years ago, hoping the medium would take off. A production like Nadeem Majdalany’s La Pandora’s Box is a refreshing film to cross my goggles, and it’s perfect for anyone who loves tech and experimental performance.
