Early in the morning while preparing his uncle’s donut shop to open, Sokha (David Chhom) and his friend Bountha (Kevin Vann) receive unwelcome visitors led by Monk (Sam Puefua). In Khmerican, a short film by writer and director Jimmy Chhiu and co-writer Dan Kerry, the narrative locks into a high-stakes standoff as these armed intruders seek refuge following a violent crime, pressuring the two young men to shield them from the approaching police.

Khmerican is so expertly produced that it easily carries the weight and texture of a full feature. It leaves you wanting more, creating the rare frustration of wishing a short had a two-hour runtime even when you knew the format going in. Chhiu’s direction operates with a level of precision that announces him as a serious voice in the action-thriller space. Grounded by Dan Kerry’s tight story and razor-sharp pacing, the project functions as a relentless pressure cooker.

Director of photography Kenzen Takahashi and editor Brent McReynolds pull the viewer directly into the claustrophobic tension, weaving between intimate character beats and kinetic suspense. Backed by a propulsive score from Ex Nihilo, every craft element works in harmony, making it hard to believe this is a low-budget independent short.

The ensemble cast matches that technical craft with genuine nuance. As Sokha, David Chhom maximizes every second of screen time, establishing a layered protagonist quietly wrestling between familial duty, personal dreams, and the immediate threat in front of him. Opposite him, Kevin Vann brings great chemistry as Bountha, capturing the anxiety of an ambitious kid eager to head off to college and leave the neighborhood’s cycle of violence behind. Even small supporting roles make an impact, with Jason Chu and Tiger Sheu turning in memorable, sharp performances as the investigating officers.

If this concept were expanded into a feature film or a serialized drama, it would easily sustain the investment. Diving deeper into the shared histories of Monk, Sokha, and Bountha would make for a truly compelling saga. Khmerican is exceptionally executed from top to bottom, grabbing hold from the opening frame and refusing to let go. Genre fans will walk away from this one energized, thoroughly impressed, and starving for more.
